Wet wintry weather causes school delays, closings
Woodbridge -

Heavy overnight rains, and a continued wet forecast for the morning, is causing schools to delay opening for at least two hours this Friday morning and forcing some other schools in rural counties to stay closed for the day.

Fauquier County, Winchester County and Carroll County Public Schools announced early Friday morning that their schools would remain closed today. Most schools in Fairfax County, Prince George's County, Frederick County, and Howard County also announced two hour delays.

The National Weather Service has placed the Washington-Baltimore region under a wet winter advisory until Noon today. With overnight temperatures at or below freezing, and freezing rain expected to continue this morning, ice accumulations up to a tenth of an inch are possible, according to the weather service. Higher ice accumulations are also possible closer to the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Temperatures are expectes to rise above freezing during the mid-morning hours chaning precipitation to rain, the weather service said.

A wintry forecast early this morning could mean travel difficulties this morning. Local transportation authorities are advising caution while driving and to be on the lookout for slippery roads and limoted visibility.
