San Mateo County sees increase in registered voters
San Mateo County -

San Mateo County has seen a 7 percent increase in the number of registered voters since the March 2004 presidential primary election, according to the county elections office.

Four years ago there were 326,982 registered voters in the county. As of Dec. 7, there were 351,351 voters, according to the elections office.

There is also a notable increase in the number of voters who are choosing not to affiliate with a particular political party. The “Decline to State” group has increased by 23.5 percent since 2004.

“This increase in voter registration is likely a sign of increased interest in the 2008 race for the presidency,” San Mateo County Chief Elections Officer Warren Slocum said in a prepared statement. “I believe every voter understands the importance of their voting choices this year, and I expect a strong voter turnout.”

County residents have until Jan. 22 to register or reregister if they wish to vote in the 2008 presidential primary.
