16 cats die in Cockeysville fire; woman and son escape

A mother and son escaped their Hunt Valley house after a fire killed 16 of their 18 cats Christmas morning, fire officials said.

Officials say the homeowner started a fire in her fireplace Christmas morning. When the blaze got out of control, she called 911.

Firefighters battled the one-alarm blaze for about an hour after it started at about 10:30 a.m.

The house may have been destroyed, said Capt. Jack Roberts of the Cockeysville Volunteer Fire Department.
