SAN FRANCISCO -

San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom today proclaimed a state of local emergency as a result of the 58,000-gallon oil spill caused by the container ship that knocked into a tower of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge last week.

Newsom cited the possible conditions of "extreme peril" to local residents that have arisen since the spill as a cause for the proclamation.

The proclamation will remain in effect until it is terminated by either Newsom or the Board of Supervisors.
