Former Maryland State Board of Education Student Member David Murray who came close to toppling incumbent Rosalind Johnson in the September 14th Primary has picked up the backing of school administrators and custodial staff in the runoff the two will compete in for the November General Election. Both Johnson and Murray are competing to represent District 1 on the Prince George's County Board of Education. The endorsement by both the Association of Supervisory and Administrative School Personnel as well as the Service Employees International Union Local 400 represent the first labor endorsements for Murray's bid to unseat the former educator. In the September 14th Primary Murray and Johnson faced each other along with five other candidates where under state law the top two vote getters face each other again in a runoff in November. For much of the night on the 14th Murray led Johnson until the early hours the next day when Johnson pulled out front beating him by only 335 votes.
David Murray is a recent graduate of Roosevelt High School and a student at UMBC. Before graduating Murray was appointed by Governor Martin O'Malley to serve on the Maryland State Board of Education where he voted against efforts by county officials to cut education funding in violation of the state Maintenance of Effort law. Rosalind Johnson was a teacher in Prince George's County before being elected to the Board of Education in 2006. If Murray is successful with defeating Rosalind Johnson he could become one of the youngest members on the board. Murray's friend Edward Burroughs who previously served as Student Member of the Prince George's County Board of Education is running for a seat in the 8th District.
