Fringe remains captivating

“Fringe” is back, and thank goodness. By far the most rewarding debut of the season, the show never fails to have the audience holding their breath, waiting for the next twist. It’s not deep, but its entertainment value is unmatched. The April 7th episode does not disappoint fans who have been waiting for the return.

The mystery of this week is a boy who is found living in an abandoned building, completely isolated and pale from lack of nutrients and sunlight. While the origin of this boy is not explained, my guess is it has something to do with Massive Dynamic or some other organization’s experimentation. Due to his living conditions, the boy is an empath, someone who has an acute sense of other people’s emotions.

His ability is directly linked to another case this episode, a murderer called the Artist. This guy finds women, sedate them and make mannequins out of them. Pretty twisted, but also fascinating. In short, the episode combines the two storylines by using the boy to track down the killer.  The cases are old-fashioned fun.  While I usualy do not like monster-of-the-week type shows, the balance of that versus story arcs is very balanced.

Sci-fi stuff aside, the episode also brings back Olivia’s sister and niece. It is rather pleasant to see a little bit of everyday life amidst the crazy cases. At the same time, one can definitely sense that the sister is introduced for a purpose yet to be disclosed. Whatever the case may be, introducing her as a recurring character was definitely a good idea.

One of the great things about any great sci-fi series is bringing back old storylines. In the case of “Fringe,” it basically means bringing back old mysteries and even scientific gadgets. While J. J. Abrams stated the show is created so audience can catch on from any episode (unlike “Lost”), it is definitely more rewarding for the loyal viewers.

The big gimmick of the show is the Observer, who makes another appearance at the end of the episode. This time, the show hints at some possible explanations for his origin. His empathetic ability along with his appearance definitely makes him akin to the boy. This means there could be multiple Observers all over the world. Crazy…

All in all, “Fringe” definitely spices up the television season. Anyone who is uncertain of this show should give it a chance, sci-fi lover or not.
