Damages season 2 review: conspiracy

Anyone who has seen “Damages” knows that trying to guess its twists and surprises is a waste of time. It is starkly relentless in the portrayal of the human condition, but its cases are a constant reminder that the truth is often hard to come by. If season 1 was any illustration of the talent of the writers, season 2 offers even more to the table.

Season 2 circles around a toxicity case against Ultima National Resources, a major energy enterprise that has been poisoning the water system of West Virginia. The case falls into Patty Hewes’ lap when an independent tester Daniel Purcell (William Hurt) sends her the undoctored test results. Of course, the case reveals a major conspiracy involving manipulated stock prices, energy brownouts and murder.

Several storylines from season 1 also come into play, specifically with the attempted murder of Ellen Parsons and the murder of David Connor. This is where season 2 excels itself in keeping track of details, storylines both new and old, and the pitch perfect pacing.

The show keeps viewers on its toes both with its seasonal cases and the employment of flashbacks, flashforwards and foreshadowing. Like any good mystery, it’s all about pieces of the puzzle. The real surprise is the continuation of two major storylines at the same time. Thanks to the draw of its two protagonists, the show multitasks with ease. The performances are also top notch. Glenn Close is a force to be reckoned with, but the addition of Marcia Gay Harden may give Close a run for her money.

That’s not to say the show is a must-see for everyone. For one, do not sympathize or wish good things for its characters. They are, for the most part, pawns to move the plot forward and illustrations of our darkest and most cunning side. The likes of Patty and Ellen are not likeable, good-natured people. They are incredibly succinct and intelligent, but manipulative and ruthless.

A consistent complaint of the show is its convoluted storylines. Missing one episode pretty much makes the show impossible to follow. Its incredibly rewarding as a loyal follower, but casual viewers will not find its pleasures here.

“Damages” is not for the faint of heart. Its tight pacing, sharp-as-nail characters and corrupt cases make the show a mystery of the best kind, but accessibility is not its strongpoint. As an admirer of the show, I am constantly in awe of its abilities. If you love a good mystery that keeps you guessing, “Damages” is my top recommendation.
