Six Months Earlier
Hewes & Associates is investigating the Tobin family under the accusation of fraud and a hidden fortune for the family. The family's patriarch, Louis, admitted to the crime one year ago and is now under house arrest while the investigation continues. As a result, the family is currently living on minimal allowances. Despite the remaining family's insistence on their innocence, Patty senses secrecy during a deposition with Marilyn Tobin. In order to get an in on the investigation, Patty hires someone to aggravate Joseph Tobin (Louis' son) to the point of being assaulted, although Patty insists on not suing. After receiving a phone number from Marilyn, Joseph approaches Patty and gives her the number. Later on, Joseph meets his father and learns that there is indeed money hiding somewhere for the family.
Ellen is now working with the D.A. and seemingly content. Despite their lack of communication in the past few months, Ellen receives a gift from Patty. While investigating a drug trafficking scheme, Ellen receives some unlikely help, suspecting Patty for the underhanded tip. The two meet and Ellen states once and for all that she's forgiven Patty and that her secrets are safe. Ellen keeps the purse that Patty's given her.
After 11 years of service, Patty allows Tom to become a named partner. Meanwhile, a man named Julian Decker repeatedly flirts with Patty at a restaurant, although she flatly refuses. When Patty calls the phone number, a homeless man answers.
Six Months Later
While driving, Patty is hit by a car. When she approaches the car, the driver seems to be missing. At the police station, the car is discovered to be registered under Tom's name. Two police agents go to the address listed under the car only to find it deserted and in shambles. Traces of blood is seen on the wall. The agents catch a homeless man (the same who answered the phone) observing them from the outside. They track down the man and finds Ellen's purse under his possession, also stained with blood.
In a nearby dumpster, the agents discover Tom Shayes' body.
