A&E's "The Glades" premiered to 3.6 million viewers, according to early Nielsen estimates. That makes the show, shot throughout Broward county, the most-watched original drama in the network's history. The record-breaking pilot also drew a larger audience on the cable network than two new summer shows ("Scoundrels" and "The Gates") on broadcast network ABC.
Bob DeBitetto, president & GM of A&E and BIO Channel, praised the show's premiere and Australian star. “The fact that 'The Glades' was able to break through in a crowded summer landscape against heavy competition is a testament to the quality of the show and the incredible talent and performance of the show’s lead Matt Passmore,” he said.
"The Glades" also broke records in the most important demographics to advertisers: 1.4 million adults 18 to 49 tuned in, along with 1.2 million adults 25 to 54. Sun-Sentinel TV critic Tom Jicha says a cable show is considered a great success if it pulls in over one million in key demographics.
An encore telecast brought in an additional 1.5 million viewers, bringing last night's total to 5.1 million tuned in to the show.
"The Glades" airs Sundays at 10 PM EST on A&E.
