It's amazing what a spin-off series can accomplish. Such is the case with Family Matters. Starring Telma Hopkins, Jaleel White, Kellie Williams and Marie Jo Payton, the popular 90s TV series was spun off from Perfect Strangers. It revolved around the Winslow family.
What really set the show a part from others was the breakout performance of Jaleel White as the pestering neighbor Steve Urkel. Family Matters aired from September 22, 1989 to September 19, 1997 on ABC, and on CBS from September 19, 1997 to July 17, 1998.
Family Matters originally focused on the character of Harriette Winslow and her core family: husband Carl Winslow, son Eddie Winslow, daughter Laura Winslow and youngest child Judy Winslow (until Season 4).
Did you know, that with 215 episodes, Family Matters is the second-longest-running U.S. sitcom with a predominantly African-American cast, beating out the Cosby Show and only surpassed only by The Jeffersons.
After Family Matters:
Kellie Williams continued acting on shows like 'Girlfriends', What About Joan, Moesha and The Parkers. She also appeared in films like 'Ride'. As of 2009 she's married to Hannibal Jackson.
Jaleel White- received his film degree from UCLA and continued acting in shows like 'Grown Ups' . Half & Half, Boston Legal and recently in Psych.
Telma Hopkins played Rachel True's mom in the short lived but popular UPN comedy, Half & Half and now has her own production venture, A New Dawn Entertainment
Trivia: In the first seasons of the show, Richie was portrayed by Bryton McClure. What Daytime Soap does Bryton now appear in?
