Frenemies
Friends-how many of us have them? In various episodes of Xena The Warrior Princess. , Xena encounters the effects of past assocations gone bad, not unlike the character Erica Evans realization about her partner Dale in the new hit tv series V on ABC.
In the episode3 of season 3 titled The Dirty Half Dozen, on Xena, Xena learns that Ares the god of war stole the secret of the armor of Hephestus and gave it to his new warlord in training Agathon. If you watched the series faithfully, you’ll know that Ares had a soft spot for Xena and when she went down the road of good, he tried many different ways to get her back to the dark side as his queen.
In this episode, the armor of Hephustus was another zany way to do just that. Xena recruited [meaning she performed a prison break] former murdering acquaintances in order to rise up against Agathaon. Of course some betrayed her and set the balls in motion for her being captured in order to save the day.
When you break this episode apart it’s a great backdrop for life. The old saying, “Keep your friends close and your enemies closer” rings true. Four of Xena’s recruits were people she met when she was an evil warlord herself. By them associating with Xena in their youth, they were changed from carpenters and farmers to lynching, blood thirsty assassins. Now that Xena was on the good path she had the resources to turn the tables and give them the same chance at redemption.
On the other end of the spectrum, Gabrielle realized that she changed a great deal since the day she met Xena and seeing the end results of the ‘recruits’ she wondered how much of her was her true self and how much of her was the new her by association with Xena. As a fan you’ll know that Xena always had a master plan and being a former bad girl, she expected to be betrayed.
Xena revealed her plan to the recruits knowing that someone would take that information back to Agathon. Isn’t that true about friends in general? But without these varied friendships how would we as people grow and change? How would we know what we’re made of if not tested or strengthened?
By then end of the episode Xena turns the tables on Agathon because one of the recruits acted as a ‘double spy’ and in doing so won the trust of Agathon. This gave him valuable knowledge about the armor of Hephestus that allowed Xena to escape and defeat Agathon.
Out of the 4 recruits two survived and changed their ways. So apparently Xena knew whom she could trust which would’ve been a great thing for Erica to know about her partner Dale.
