OMTL: Day 2

What would you do if you only had one month to live?
What would you do if you had only one month to live?  Welcome to day 2!

Day 2

The Shooks title the day two reading, Roller Coaster: Riding the Big Dipper. The anonymous quote that begins the chapter conveys the essence of what follows.
“Life isn’t measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away.”
Unfortunately, some people do measure life by the breaths they take. It’s all about the how long instead of the how full. Today, we are asked to ask ourselves how we see our life.
Is it a trip along a straight path with maximum safety features on our vehicle or does it have the suspense and exhilaration of a roller coaster ride?
Our challenge is not to move towards a cavalier life style, taking risks at every turn. Likewise, we have probably not lived anywhere near to the full if we go through life in a glass box with a sign that says, break only upon the second coming of Christ.
The Shooks address something called the Someday Syndrome. In this part of the country, we more likely say, when I get around to it. Some clever novelty company actually makes coins embossed with the words TUIT on them. The idea is that you give one to a habitual procrastinator and say, now you’ve got a round tuit.
Today’s challenge is to realize that this is life. Life isn’t something that comes after school, or after work, or during those golden retirement years. Life is today. That’s all that is promised. Life is today.
The make it count moment for today is to ask ourselves, what are we doing in our lives that requires faith?
If we are not doing anything that requires faith, then ask: why not?

Today’s questions.
  • If you knew that your life was coming to an end in the next few weeks, what would be your biggest regret? Why?
  • In what area of your life are you suffering from the someday syndrome?
  • The Shooks use the metaphor of the roller coaster to describe their lives. What metaphor would you use?
