Day One
For those who are following this online commentary of
One Month to Live as many take this challenge in Western Oklahoma; the day one reading seems a little flat. Titling this devotion,
Living the Dash, seems a bit contrived. How many emails have we read with this theme? How contrived a beginning this seems.
Wait a minute! Aren’t you supposed to be promoting this program?
No. I am promoting an honest, life searching, soul searching, examination of all that accept the challenge to truly ask, “What if I only had one month to live?”
It’s not a unique premise. Others have posed the same question in similar ways. Preachers have delivered this challenge over the years to congregations near and far.
So what is unique about this program?
It is a program that begs for honesty and action. It notes the liberation of those who know they will die in a few short weeks be it from cancer, disease, or just worn out parts. It notes this liberation and asks us, “Why not live liberated now?”
Why not live without regrets beginning today?
Our time on earth is limited. We are a mist that is here briefly and is gone. We may have a month or a century, but in an eternal perspective, our time in this life is but a brief moment. Why would we live that moment with regrets?
The Shooks offer some challenges for this first day. They suggest:
Quickly make a list of 5 things that you would change in your life if you found out today that you only had a month to live. Then chose one to begin changing today.
Describe how you would like your life to be different at the end of this challenge. What drew you to read the book or this article or to go to one of the public messages or small groups?
Tell at least one other person that you are taking this one month challenge. Ask that person to circle the 28th of March 2010 on the calendar and ask you how your life has changed. Use a different date if you are taking this challenge at a different time from the churches in Western Oklahoma.
Please click through to the provocations each day, and whenever possible leave you thoughts, insights, and commentary.
Join the 30 day challenge in western Oklahoma regardless of where you live!
