The one tattoo you can get in pregnancy! part 1

The first part of my interview with local henna artist and doula, Taryn Goodwin:

(Taryn Goodwin)

-So, Taryn, what got you interested in adding henna art to your list of pregnancy-related services?

"Well, there were two or three reasons why I looked into offering henna art to pregnant moms. First, I was looking for ways to help moms boost their morale in the third trimester. That's the time when you start to feel sooo big and cumbersome and often that makes a pregnant mom feel unattractive. Henna art was a way to help moms feel "prettier", as well as helping them get more in tune with their bodies. It's a great exercise, laying down, connecting with your baby and letting someone pamper you. Henna art also is a discrete way to hide stretch marks, which can be a big plus for some moms."

"Secondly, I hoped that by decorating their belly with beautiful designs, moms would pause before having an induction "just because". Having their belly covered in flowers, blessings and such can remind them to savor the last few days of pregnancy before diving into the huge responsibility of parenthood or of adding another child to their family!"

"Thirdly, the henna paste is actually very cooling and calming...it can be very soothing to skin that feels like it is stretched to the max!"

-Where did henna body art originate from?

"The application of henna to the body is actually an art form called "Mehndi" and it originated in South Asia. Traditionally it was used to prepare for celebrations such as weddings and festivals. I actually offer a service called a "blessingway" ceremony where an expectant mom can invite a group of her friends to come and get henna art with her. The mom-to-be usually gets a design on her belly and her friends get anklets or wristlets, in simpler designs such as flowers or paisley. It is a great way to honor the new mother and is something for her to think about when she is in labor...the fact that she has a circle of friends that support her."

Check back Saturday for the rest of this interview!
