Broken records: what's the breakthrough that's waiting for you?

"I'll spread my wings and I'll learn how to fly
I'll do what it takes till I touch the sky
I'll make a wish
Take a chance
Make a change
And breakaway…"

~ lyrics from Breakaway by Kelly Clarkson

When baseball player Barry Bonds broke Hank Aaron's homerun record, fans of the American pastime went wild. More improbable is the grandfather who went back to college in order to complete a dream interrupted 37 years ago: playing varsity football. Three times the age of his current teammates and eight years older than his coach, this fantastically fit 59-year-old proved that even when you put the brakes on, you can still break through down the line — because old records don't die, they just digitize.

What of the significant records begging to be broken and new benchmarks set, such as the fewest number of people to die in needless combat this day/month/year, or of starvation, or preventable disease?

Ben Franklin, a U.S. Founding Father, defined insanity as, "doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results." More than a century later, Einstein elevated this dictum to implicit action by declaring, "Problems cannot be solved at the same level of awareness that created them."

Our present magnitude of Earth changes offers ample opportunity for breaking our habitual thought patterns. Aluna Joy Yaxk'in calls it an "extreme makeover of consciousness...erasing all the wrinkles in our souls," exemplified by the massive earthquakes, hurricanes, and acceleration of volcanic activity we've experienced in recent times. These extraordinary weather fluctuations are part of the renewal process, a rebalancing of Earth's energies and grids along sensitive fault lines.

I'm reminded of former Congresswoman Jeannette Rankin's declaration, "You can no more win a war than you can win an earthquake." Perhaps earthquakes occur on "faults" because areas of weakness or stress, in us and in our planetary body, cause fear and trembling; it's only natural. This is why it's essential to monitor how we respond to what's happening globally: accepting the changes with equanimity, strengthening and protecting our energy fields daily in order to remain grounded, clear, and connected.

If we replace "fault lines" with laugh lines, for instance, we'll add a whole new wrinkle to our wise old Mother — and ourselves. As anyone who's read one of my favorite books, A Wrinkle In Time by Madeleine L'Engle, knows, this is the kind of magical, Möbius strip-like shift that can take us where no one has gone before … trekking into new dimensions of possibility!

In an article entitled, Become Your Own Religion, Daniel Jacob writes, "Folks used to capture, interrogate, and burn 'witches.' These individuals were doing unfamiliar things that the society of their time did not understand. There is an old saying, which goes: 'You can always tell the pioneers. They're the ones with the arrows in their back.'

"What we need today is to stop looking for witches to burn and start paying attention to what truly sets each of us on fire. What is it that you would gladly do forever, whether or not you got paid? Are you doing it, or have you let it be pushed out of your life by other things?"

It's so amazingly REAL — and vitalizing — to walk our own road, even as it's being paved three feet in front of us. As Daniel reminds us, this is what Originals do. They don't become "like" anyone else, they simply become more of who they fundamentally are.

I'm witnessing the essence of this truth in the Millennials: those born in the last quarter century, whose voices are beginning to make themselves heard in a major way. I've been privileged to spend time with some enchanting 19-23 year olds who, in another context, might refer to me as "Mom". Since my mission mantle is more midwife than mother this incarnation, they call me "sister", recognizing another pilgrim on the path.

There is an easy acceptance, a lightheartedness, to this group; an absence of the apathy or youthful angst that's characterized many previous generations. They're not lackadaisical — just the opposite. They have no need to prove themselves, feeling intrinsically One with the All, and thus, inherently joyful. My own frequency is heightened after spending time in Millennials' company.

We might think of it as segueing from hubris to humus: transitioning from superficial, synthetic behavior to certified organic thought and action.

So be willing to give yourself a sporting chance. Go for broke … the breakthrough only you can do. Your touchdown turnaround awaits.
