One of my favorite ways of learning new techniques is by watching trailers. They are just as intriguing to view as any movie. Quite often, more imagination is put into the selling of a movie than the movie itself. They are a concentration of two hours into two minutes. Their purpose is small yet extremely powerful: get paying customers into movie theatres. The newest New Moon trailer is no exception.
New Moon has a built in audience, so it is expected that the trailer must cater to them. It gives the fan a confirmation on what is carried over from the book into the movie. As books do not translate in the same manner as the movie version, bits are cut and added. The great Harry Potter saga has had the same story cutting, for time and visual impact.
The New Moon trailer fulfills this purpose, give a greater glimpse and show off the most promising scenes. But in a few instances, the editing of this trailer might reveal than it should.
One thing that must be kept in mind is that not everyone has read the books (Blasphemy! many would cry), or plans to read them. Many people intend to just see the movie when released and it is in this that I must comment.
Story and plot are over-revealed. Less is more, but it seems as this idea was pushed aside for fanfare. Based on the trailer alone, we know that Bella is believed to be dead in the eyes of Edward, so he plans to end his own life, such as it is for being undead. We see that Bella manages to stop his attempt at suicide. Further, Romeo, excuse me, Edward, engages in a fight with other vampires in the tribunal, clearly after having been saved by Juliet, oops, I mean Bella. This destroys potential tensions and climax to the story.
There is another man vying for her affections and since you can’t have vampires without werewolves, this new gentleman caller must be one of those. We know that Bella is attracted to this werewolf, but the trailer reveals that inevitably, she chooses Edward. The trailer takes away the possible conflict that she might have in where her heart lies.
I will add this, typically the director has very little over the editing of a trailer, it is up to the movie studios and the market department. Often, they are released without the director having seen them, let alone approve them.
This can hurt a movie if not done in the proper way. Improper movie marketing can hurt a film if we as an audience believe that we have seen what it has to offer in two minutes. Arlington Road is a great example. This wonderful film is an example of poor marketing trailer exposure. It appeared to give away the whole story. Ironically, the trailer was a ruse for a different subplot that was part of the movie, which had quite the surprise ending.
Jaws proved less is more. So did Alien. Twilight should abide.

Sorry, but the movies are popular because of the books. Of course they are catering to that group of readers, it's their base, and bread and butter. If you haven't read the books, you aren't following the movies THAT close.
aaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!! i saw the trailer on tv on the vmas and it was good and robert pattinson look so hot i cant take my mind off him and im going at mid night to see new moon im excited im like the biggest fan of twilight and i just finshed the books and im reading them again
If you haven't read the books, then it will be pointless in going to the movies. Most book to movie projects are made because the BOOKS are successful not the other way around. So, yes, if the trailer has given the storyline away, who cares. The movie is geared for those who already know the plot. If the movie was popular and the books were not then I would understand your point of view. But since Stephanie Meyer has written a BOOK and not a MOVIE that is a hit, the trailer give away whatever. We, the fans are watching the movies to see how much of the book comes to life. Please remember, alot of people are visual.
I disagree with your critique of the trailer as many of the scenes shown are out of order from the book and out of context. They make the viewer think the whole plot is based around the threat of the Vultari (spelling?) which it is not. You gave away a lot of spoilers which may not necessarily have been assumed by the none-book reading viewer of this trailer. (such as who she picks and the fight, which is not even in the book.) Thats all I have to say.
like it matters, the books are WAY better than the movie(s). im sorry but i thought twilight the movie sucked and i bet new moon isnt going to be any better. i thought twilight was a waste of seven dollars. if you saw the movie without reading the books then you probably like the movie; i read the books then i saw the movie and i personally think the director could have done a much better job.
I am SO excited to see this movie!!! I also have to agree that Twilight was a much better book than it was a movie. I think if I had gone to see Twilight without reading the books, I would have been a little lost. I had all of the book in my head and it helped fill in the many blanks that were left by the movie. I still enjoyed it but there could have been much more done to make it better. Oh well, here's hope that New Moon is as great as the trailer makes it seem to be! :) GO VAMPIRES! :)
Pattison in the new trailer looks fantastic. He is the perfect actor for this role. I am excited about seeing how Edward enters Bella's dreams in New Moon.
I can't wait to see new moon!!!! i just wish the moviw would just come out i cant wait any longer nd Edward looks different but still sexy nd so does jacob black!!!!!!!!!!!!!
can u believe i read twilight like 19 times,new moon 17 times,eclipse 18 times and breakndg dawn like 19 times!!!! i could read 1 book in just 3 days but breking dawn takes like 1 week.Anyway i need to see new oon i love it i seen the previews and im anxious to see it.(why does it have to be on november 20?)

i agree with the people who have read the book(s). i don't like people who simply view this as a movie series, just like harry potter and the lord of the rings. The trailer gives away enough of the plot to show the readers that the director is trying to please the true fans. I was disappointed though, it seems they hammed up the vultori scene with more action, which i geuss will make it more dramatic from a theatrical point of view since you can't really hear what is going on through bella's own words. i just wanna watch it so bad though!!!! i don't really care if they leave too many things out. but did any1 notice that edward's car is different? that's kinda lame.
One can only hope that the director of New Moon does not completely massacre the book, as was the case in Twilight. However the blame cannot be solely appointed to the director - the actors being picked for aesthetic purposes rather than talent, meant that the whole film came across as a bad comedy. The cast for the Volturi in this film is promising - so lets hope that the others can lift their standard.
