Thanks for nothing: Obama energizes FOX, ratings up about 10% during White House feud

Obama promised to bring change, and it seems he has done exactly that – at least when it comes to FOX News, which he has changed into an even bigger ratings powerhouse than it already was.

The Obama White House’s inexplicable war on Fox has, as we predicted, magnified FOX’s stature among viewers. Far from marginalizing FOX and delegitimizing it as a news source as intended, the feud has made more people than ever choose FOX News as its favored source of television infotainment.

FOX’s ratings have bumped up almost ten percent in the two weeks since White House decided to engage FOX News directly. And among advertisers’ favorite demographic – the spendy twenty-five to fifty-four year olds – FOX’s ratings are up a whopping fourteen percent.

This is probably not the kind of change Obama voters thought they were voting for. Congratualtions, Obama. You have transformed FOX into the most successful “news” channel ever.

Even I’ll admit: FOX having gotten into Obama’s crosshairs makes it intriguing. It makes one to take a peek and see what’s going on over there. What can they possibly be doing that is such a threat to the President of the United States? Voters, intrigued, are tuning into find out.

No doubt FOX News executives are delighted by the free publicity from the White House. Time for the White House to wave the white flag on this one: they were never going to win this war anyway.

Is it really any wonder? Der Wunderkind Obama hat nichts gemacht, so the new Fringe Media (ABC, NBC, CNN, & CBS) aren't worthy of viewership.

What is really the difference between watching all of the pro-Obama newscasts, daily Obama speeches, Rahm's personal vent channel & only 'good things' coming out of the White House and the White House Ministry of Propaganda? Nothing.

Anita Done, can't be Done enough and needs to move on. December can't come fast enough, and neither can this circus go away fast enough.

I feel for you, but I gotta say this first year seems to have gone by so fast, with so little accomplished.

I have a theory: The voters weren't really paying attention to what PBO wanted for America, they only voted for "Not Bush III". So, when he flaps his gums about what he really wants, nobody is buying...

Read: Just because somebody doesn't want somebody else, doesn't mean they necessarily want you, Mr. PBO.

"Ratings powerhouse"? Fox's ratings for the most recent quarter averaged 2.25 million viewers, and a 10% jump, therefore, represents an additional 200K viewers. That means nearly 303 million Americans AREN'T watching. Fox may be a big deal among cable news, but to suggest they're a "powerhouse"is hyperbole.

Some more perspective: the season premiere of "Jon & Kate Plus 8" drew 9.8 million viewers.

Comparing NCIS, Dancing with the Dummies, the NFL and so on with Fox News is an apples to oranges argument.

Compare Fox's numbers to MSNBC and CNN in terms of veiwership. How many viewers does Creep Olberdunce, Rachel Madcow and Chrissy Matthews have? Then compare those three with Beck, Hannity and O'Reilly. The three at Fox News are beating them hands down.

When one combines the viewership for Beck, Hannity, & O'Reilly, they are FAR more than Morning Joe, Rick Sanchez's show, Olberdunce's Show, Behar's show, Madcow's show and Matthew's show COMBINED.

People here need to up the numbers that are watching Beck, Hannity, O'Reilly, Greta, Fox & Friends and so on. Much more than 3 million.

The spiteful FOX NEWS haters here need to stop being so jealous of Fox News. It is unbecoming to them.

    From Broadcastingcable.com:

Fox News has been at the top of Cable News for 86 consecutive months.

    FNC: averaged 2.8 million viewers.

    MSNBC: averaged 1.3 million.

    CNN: averaged 1.1 million.

No wonder the spiteful haters of Fox News are soooooo jealous of Fox News. It is still unbecoming of the spiteful haters of Fox News, though, to be soooooo jealous of Fox News. LOL.

Now pull up the numbers for the three broadcast networks evening newscasts, Joe.

Even with decreased viewership in recent years, the Big Three pull in about 23 million viewers each night.

That's a full power of magnitude greater than Fox.

James, FOX News is generally offered in what is known as "premium basic" or "basic plus," packaging, the highest cost plan before you get into buying HBO, etc.

It is not automatically available simply because one has satellite or cable service.

Apples to apples, against MSNBC and CNN, FOX News IS a powerhouse.

You must be a Time Warner customer, DRH. DirectTV and Dish both include it in their lowest price packages and most cable providers do as well.

Time Warner is a somewhat special case, being the parent of CNN - and the legacy of the Turner - Murdoch food fight in the 1990s.

But if you get Time Warner's Family Choice Tier, you get ONLY HLN - not Fox, not CNN and not MSNBC. (At least, that was the case about a year ago - I haven't checked lately.)

[See, I can cut & paste too!]

    James,

How long is ABC NEWs, CBS NEWS & NBC NEWS on each day? 30 minutes each, each day? 6 days a week? I know that they are on 5 days a week each. Not sure if they are on Saturdays.

How long if Fox News on? 24/7, 7 days a week.

FOX NEWS is greater than ABC NEWS, CBS NEWS and NBC NEWS.

Do the math, Joe - even in that 24 hours, Fox's total unique viewership is still a fraction of that of the Big Three evening newscasts.

(CNN's numbers look a lot better too, when you take the 24-hour look.)

And remember, Fox NETWORK - their broadcast arm - doesn't even have a nightly newscast. And their Sunday morning show is only carried on about half of their local affiliates.

Sorry to disappoint the Fox-fans, but they are a Big Fish only in the sense they are swimming in a little pond.

  • Joe 2 years ago

    James,

Unique viewership? Not unique. Multiple surveys have shown that Fox News viewership is closet to an even percentage of Democrats, Independents and Conservatives watching it. Yes, CNN and MSDNC have Democrats, Independents and Conservatives watching them, too, but Fox's viewership is THE closet to a 33/33/33 split among those three.

Secondly, if Fox News is supposedly just a Big Fish only in the sense that they are swimming in a little pond (as you said), then Obeyme, Axeldorf, Anita "Mao Tse's tongue" Dunn, aka Lizard Tongue, and others in "Duh One's" administration would NOT have went after Fox News like they did.

Their actions speak louder than your words.

    Check and mate.

It just makes Obama look weak attacking the media. I didn't hear him kiss MsNBC's butt for doing such a good job stroking him. This move will back fire. Makes Obama look like a whinny little bi-atch!

So what happens when other news outlets start to attack Obama...will he pull the same thing? Is he creating an enemies list?

Obama needs to be careful, the media will stand up for each other...who knows who will be next on his hit list....very scary!

Joe, your lack of comprehension means you ain't even in the same game, much less calling checkmate.

"Unique viewers" is not a categorizing them as unusual - "unique viewers" is the television version of "unique visitors" to a website - how many INDIVIDUALS saw it, as opposed to how many times it was seen.

For example, you have viewed this thread at least four times - but there is only ONE of YOU.

Nielsen and others have shown that Fox has a core of viewers who watch several hours a day; much more so than any of the other cable news networks. If YOU watch Beck, O'Reilly, Hannity, and three newscasts, you are only one unique viewer - but you inflate the daily viewer count by six.

James- Fox has a big audience, but that is not the number one reason why the Administration has made them a target. It is because they are setting the pace for all of the other networks. The New York Times used to determine what was going to be "news", now Fox is breaking stories like Van Jones and the ACORN scandal, and the other networks are being "forced" to follow the Fox story. That is what scares this Administration, they are losing control, and to a conservative leaning network no less. Fox is making the news happen with their investigative approach, while the other are content to just repeat and report. In reality, Fox is the "real news", the others just repeat what they are spoon fed. Of course Obama wants to do whatever he wants unchallenged, which is why Fox presents such an obstacal to Obama. This, of course, is exactly what the free press is supposed to do to protect us from power hungry politicians. Everyone should be thanking Fox, they proctect us all.

  • James 2 years ago
    Report Abuse

Sure Greg - that's why people who say Fox News is their primary source for news consistently rank lowest in surveys of actual knowledge of politics and international affairs.

Heck, the most recent study found that almost half the Fox viewers still think Saddam Hussein and Iraq were behind 9/11 and that Iraq had still had WMDs when we invaded in 2003.

As someone else has said, the administration's complaining about Fox may be a clever ploy to show the rest of the news media is not 'in the tank' for Obama like people claim.

Regardless, it's a tempest in a teapot. If you want a real presidential war against the media, you need to look to FDR.

James and Joe, wow, what an argument. I once heard, that arguing ont the internet is like running in the special olympics. Even when you win, your still retarded. What exactly are you guys proving here? Who cares if Fox is a powerhouse, the point is they have managed to scare the whitehouse.
