Joe Galaxy has been making his name in the entertainment industry as a triple threat for awhile now. But more recently he has turned his focus from acting and modeling squarely to pursuing his solo artistry in the music industry. After meeting up with Hip Hop heavy weight Renegade Foxxx, the two joined forces to create music that Joe simply labels, “Futuristic.” I had a chance to sit down and chat with the up and coming music innovator and found out how he got his start, his influences and what he considers his defining moment to date.
Marian: When did your career in the entertainment industry begin?
Joe Galaxy: “I’ve been acting for awhile now and I started training with the stage so I’ve done stage theater in comedy and that’s my foundation and from there I went into commercial and films. Almost at the same time I started doing music as well. I had a friend who had a studio and I used to use everything; I started making my own beats and I started writing my own lyrics. I collaborated with people who do R&B, I collaborated with people doing Hip Hop and hardcore rap and even people doing heavy metal so I’ve been on the stage rapping with metal bands.”
Marian: Who or what are the influences and/or the inspirations behind your music and artistry?
Joe Galaxy: “It is really broad. I could tell you when I was in kindergarten my mother put me through piano lessons. And to be honest with you, I would sit there with piano lessons before school and watch the kids outside playing and I really wanted to be outside playing with them but it sowed a seed in my head for classical stuff. I like Beethoven but then again I really like Lil Wayne, I love Nirvana, I love that grunge sound. So all of those influenced me I used to listen to Waka Flaka, Young Jeezy. I have the versatility that I can go into those realms. But then I started liking Okenfold and I like dance club stuff and that’s really where my passions at right now is making really nice bass heavy songs that people can have a good time to but done so that it appears to all the sides like I’m coming from all the point of views in a way that everyone can appreciate it.”
Marian: It’s been said that your sound is genre-bending, in your own words how would you describe or classify your sound?
Joe Galaxy: “One of the tracks ‘Futuristic’ is a not from this planet sound and feeling and maybe an out of this universe look. I think what you’re going to hear, especially with ‘Crazy Sexy’ which is going to be a next track, is that we’re not copying anybody else, we’re our own influences. And I would say that ‘Futuristic’ is out of this world but yet it has a down to earth, fun, funky robotic flow. That’s basically what I think it does.”
Marian: Tell me a what we can expect with your forthcoming debut album?
Joe Galaxy: “What we’re trying to do is really get an album full of bangers and nail that so people say this whole album is awesome. So far we’re doing really good with the tracks, ‘Crazy Sexy’ and ‘Bank Roll’. But it’s just getting better and better. What I can tell you also is that we might flow over into the dance area and then we might flow back into the rap area so that’s really what you can expect.”
Marian: Do you have a title yet?
Joe Galaxy: “I’m actually working on that but it will be something with the future included in the title. I haven’t nailed it down yet but that’s kind of the theme of it.”
Marian: Do you have an album release date?
Joe Galaxy: “I don’t have an exact day but I think we’re looking at early 2012.”
Marian: How difficult is it for you to balance your acting career with breaking into the music industry, and the modeling you have done?
Joe Galaxy: “It’s really easy because right now the focus is music and I would say that’s my real passion because with that I can express myself and I can really be Joe Galaxy in the music. In acting I’m being someone else. And I love acting but with the music I’m just the truth and I can really be Joe Galaxy and I think that there is a lot in there for a lot of people. So I’m just focusing on what I’m doing now. If there is some really interesting rolls in acting that appear before me and I can balance it with really nailing this futuristic album I’ll do them. And one other thing, I’m constantly as an actor working on my craft so I work out and I’m working on my voice, I have a vocal coach. I have a trainer so I’m working on my physical appearance. It’s a routine day by day developing my acting, developing my body, developing my voice.”
Marian: What do you find is the biggest challenge for you as an up and coming artist in the music industry?
Joe Galaxy: “There’s been so many challenges and one thing that has kept me going is that I’m a really persistent person and the thing is to just keep going and to stay in the game long enough to get the result that you’re looking for. When you have the energy built up it just pushes you forward until you start gaining momentum. I would just say to anyone that believes in themselves, that’s all that matters. You just got to believe in yourself and do it. The biggest challenge is everyday waking up to motivate yourself to keep going and don’t stop. Don’t be comfortable. Look for that next horizon.”
Marian: What would you say has been a defining moment for you to date?
Joe Galaxy: “I got to be honest with ya, I think one of the biggest defining moments would be hitting it off with Renegade Foxxx and more than that just the fact that the first collaboration that we did together was amazing and our song ‘Crazy Sexy’ is a result of our first collaboration. I like listening to that song myself and I enjoy it. When everything comes together for you, that’s a defining thing.”
