A 9 year old Brazilian girl, pregnant with twins is forced to have an abortion. According to the the news websites G1, pe360graus and the Diario de Pernambuco, the Brazilian girl, who was not identified because she is a minor, was found to be four months pregnant after being taken to hospital suffering stomach pains.
MediaTakeOut reports, according to News Australia:
"We don't know if she will develop the pregnancy up to the end because of the structure of her body. It is a big risk for her,'' the doctor who confirmed her pregnancy before she was taken to the institute, Jose Severiano Cavalcanti, told the Diario de Pernambuco.
"She doesn't have a pelvis able to support a gestation of twins,'' he said.
Abortion is illegal in Brazil except in cases of rape or if the woman's health is in danger.
police believe the girl’s 23-year-old stepfather was abusing her since she was aged six - paying her one Brazilian real (about 42 cents) each time he molested her.
He also allegedly abused the girl's physically handicapped 14-year-old sister. He was arrested on Thursday as he attempted to flee to another region in Brazil, and was being kept in protective custody.

Did she, or her parents or guardian, ask for a second opinion? Maybe they could have been delivered by C-section. Maybe they could have waited a bit to determine if she was really stresses that much. It's a shame to kill two little babies-to-be.

According to a variety of sources, the first opinion was that the girl's life was not in danger and that it was possible to save all three lives. Another group transferred the girl to another hospital where a social worker (not a doctor) said the girl was going to die, limited the girls access to the tutelary council (Brazil's child protection), and forced the parents (the stepfather of course was not involved), to sign for the abortion.
It wasn't just the Church. The girl's own parents were trying to stop the procedure, as they wanted neither their daughter nor their granddaughters to die.
The right decision was made for the child. She is the one that has been violated and hurt. No need for it to continue and cause pain and torture for the rest of her life. She is living and breathing and made it through to this side so she has the right to a life. To have allowed the pregnancy to continue would be plain stupidity. Inbreading is all religions is forbidden (for reasons I might add)- why would anyone support hurting the child further by trying to continue the pregnancy. Those in favour have a real long hard look at your values - you may have fallen off the path. Would you really want the fetus born and then to follow the path of her poor abused mother - how could you want that for anyone. Pull your head out of the sand and grow a heart!

Re-Thinker, even if a 9 year old COULD deliver twins by c-section, even if her body could survive the strain of supporting those lives, which is difficult even under the best of circumstances for an ADULT woman, the psychological damage would be to great to contemplate and doubly compounded by the initial molestation trauma. I can agree that an abortion should be an absolute last resort, but get realistic here. Likely all three would die in this case and that would be even worse. Is the 9 year old any less innocent than the fetuses she was carrying?
