Did you get a chance to see the premiere of MTV's new reality show, Jersey Shore Thursday night? Well, some people did, and were very displeased by the cast members that they claim were a bad decision. The show follows the lives of eight roommates during a summer stay at Seaside, NJ. The show was marketed as depicting the experience of residents from all over the tri-state area at one of the most popular summer vacation destinations in the area, but so far the premiere of the show has fell short of expectations.
New Jerseyans are mad, UNICO, the Largest Italian American Service Organization in the USA, is mad and now popular chain pizza restaurant, Dominoes is mad and has pulled ads from the show . "One of the ads happened to show up and once we saw what the program was, we decided that the content wasn't in keeping with what we're all about," said Tim McIntyre, the company's vice president of communications to TVGuide.com.
So, what's the big deal? Well, apparently some Italian-Americans are upset at the representation of the eight cast members embracing Italian-American stereotypes and culture and also tossing around the word "guido" and "guidette" as a term of endearment. A Northern New Jersey resident who is also Italian-American chooses to remain anonymous but said, "Basically it seems like real Italians/NJ people hate it, as the show is just a bunch of trashing New York people anyway. It's sad but I'd bet my right arm that some people are actually proud of this show and love the fist pumping action".

DJ Pauly D said: "I got a f---ing tanning bed in my place, that's how serious I am about being a Guido and living up to that lifestyle."
Sammi aka Sweetheart said: "The smaller the shorts, the better because all the little Guido guys out there love them."
The backlash towards the show also is that some feel that it doesn't capture the true essence of the "Jersey shore" and if the show wasn't going to truly represent the various people who make up the Jersey Shore they should have not labeled it as such. The argument has validity for people who thought after a somewhat unofficial underdog status, New Jersey would maybe actually get some shine this time, but were disappointed that the shore is just setting the scene for the fast, irresponsible, and narcissistic cast members.
MTV's response to criticism of the show is that they have a history of identifying different sub-cultures popular among a younger generation and this is just one avenue of showing that and is not intended for all audiences.
Also, while some people are upset at the images portrayed on the show, is what the cast members are saying all that different from what the older generation already thinks about young people today in general despite ethnic background and geographical location?
If we take away the offended groups of people - namely some New Jerseyans and Italians - aren't they doing more damage to the stereotype of young people only being concerned with hooking up, buying the best clothes and spending excessive amounts of money than anything else?

The problem with the show isn't the show- it was MTV's brazen and callous use of the term 'Guido' to define the Italian cast members in national television and print ads. Guido is a derogatory, ethnic slur to Italians. MTV should be held accountable. MTV wants to air a show about buffoons? Fine. Just don't refer to them by slurs and attempt to defend it by having a cast member say 'Guido' isn't a slur, its a lifestyle. Someone got the message...Domino's is pulling its ads from the show.

I haven't watched the show, and I won't, but I can tell you right now I have a friend with a house in seaside and I can tell you a lot of the people there are NOT like this, in fact these people are the shame of the board walk, nothing but a joke as we pass them. Loud, obnoxious and saying there from jersey when they really moved here when they were 12 from Staten Island... this show is a disgrace.
Over all the years MTV has had several shows based in the Jersey Shore, about living at the Jersey Shore or being from the Jersey Shore. However, NONE of the cast memebers in ANY of the shows were ACTUALLY from the Jersey Shore. All of us that are from here at sick of it and the rest of the country and world now thinks we are all like that. Honestly, we wish every summer that they would stay home. They only take our parking spots, cause fights, crowd our favorite hangouts and well, they do give us something to laugh out. Its time MTV does a show on real Jersey Shore people. Ones how dont all dress the same, talk the same and act the same.

The cast isn't very attractive. The guys look feminine in the face the girls are chunky. And why do they all look so shinny from thier hair to thier skin.
There is a reason why they went and filmed at Seaside, aka Sleaze-side. The NYers dominate the area for the summer and what you see in the show really happens all the time there. Its entertaining but I know that only a few towns on the Shore are actually represented by this show. That's how we used to talk back in the 80's as twenty-somethings in Margate and Wildwood. Nothing has changed.
i hate when mtv has shows like this..i travel for work and whenever i tell someone im from jersey they automatically think im like the guys on mtv cause im from jersey..what douchebags..they just make me laugh and the girls who like them are pathetic!!
I love the show and think it is great the guys on it are smoking hot why is everyone talking smack about it dont watch it then if you dont like it. Although nj sucks so badly (and yes I have been there before) this show is a pretty good and accurate description of the people there.
I'm from the Jersey Shore and I will tell you, it's NOTHING like that. The Jersey Shore is so much nicer than it's portrayed in this show. MTV finally came up with something that would create controversy and bring in some $$. Personally, I'm not offended, I find it hilarious, but that's because I live here and know it's nothing like that. People just need to lighten up and realize it's not true. I'll keep watching, good humor.
I agree with Nancy. Amazing television - like watching a train wreck. I would like to think that most people watching it have enough common sense to understand these people aren't (and arn't intended to represent) the populace that actually lives there. We see examples of steriotypes every day - they exist in real life - but they certainly are not ever representative of a whole group of people. It's MTV not National geographic.

For any real residents,... viewers like myself really don't think this group represents all Italian Americans, or NJ as a whole. Heck, Kevin Smith and his crew are all from NJ. They are the antithesis of these people.

This show is an fn joke. I am italian and live in cleveland and italians dont dress or act like that here or they would get there asses whipped. Those dudes were so corny and those girls were complete trash. MTV is an fn joke and when those girls get aids from being whores and the guys get skin cancer and heart problems from tanning and steroids i will laugh my ass off.

oK, So the show sucks but ive had a house....yes im a benny...for 15 years down the shore and no the "real" people that live there are nothing like that, not guidos dont punp their fists but just as trashy. This is a perfect rep of what the Jersey shores like come June.

This is not the new jersey shore at all. seaside is an absolute dump. i have never seen this show only clips on t.v. and it looks horrible. i think the snooki girl looks good but i heard about her being arrested for beind a dumbshit on the beach. all i did was see this clip and i hear the audio and its just horrible. im italian and i never call my italian buddys or family guido or guidette. horrible. im not offended just like wow italians are.NOT like this! MTV youve done it again with putting more crap on tv that not one can learn from. more dummys getting drunk and spreading herpes. i hope this show gets ended soon and all these losers are never ever heard from again.
