"With Great Power Comes Great...Choreography?" A Spider-Man musical by U2

It's fitting that Wolverine, excuse me, Hugh Jackman declared at the Oscars that, "The musical is back!"

According to Reuters, Marvel's wonder boy, Spider-Man, may go from wall crawling adventurer to falsetto belting thespian as Spider-Mansoon as next year.  A long thought out idea entitled "Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark" has finally been given an opening date on Broadway, February 18th of 2010.  Shocking, I know, but it gets even stranger.  The music and lyrics for the show will be supplied by none other than U2 leading men Bono and the Edge.

I'll admit I'm a fan of musical theatre, I'm also fond of Spidey and there's nothing I like more than a good U2 song, but this is too much.  It's like when you were a kid and your cool uncle let you eat nothing but ice cream and candy one weekend until you ended up with a massive stomach ache.  Some things (superheroes) should stick to their venues of success (comic books/film/television) and that's not to say there's no room for masked/caped men on Broadway, just look at the Phantom of the Opera.

Most people haven't heard of the musical It's a Bird...It's a Plane...It's Superman, and there's a good reason for that.  It proved that even the Man of Steel himself, Superman, couldn't carry a decent tune back in the sixties, despite massive character popularity and I'd hate to see the Web Head become a parody of himself in a similar fashion.

I understand it's a little early to be passing judgment on a project still a year away, but all the elements for disaster are in place.  Even the title, "Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark" sounds ridiculous, almost like the title of an empowering Lifetime Original drama.  But this is the first time Spidey's teamed with Bono and the Edge and perhaps the trio can clean up the streets of Broadway together.

But my "failure sense" is still tingling.

PS- I'd just like to congratulate myself for never writing the phrase, "swinging into theatres" during this article.

I doubt this will be a Broadway show that I will be seeing. There are just some things that I don't think can be put to music and Spiderman is one of them.
