Yesterday, Superman single handedly proved the recession is over. In a private auction, the 1938 issue #1 of Action Comics, that featured the first appearance of Superman, sold for one million dollars to an anonymous Manhattan resident. Not bad considering the original newsstand price was only ten cents.
While it is not unheard of to see mint condition, rare comic books from the 1930's and 40's sell for six figures, this super sale has shattered all previous records and raised the bar once more on the value of being a geek.
The online auction house comicconnect.com mediated the sale yesterday of the vintage comic that was rated as a 9.0 by the Certified Guaranty Company (CGC) for it's excellent condition. The former record-holder was sold just last year. It too was another Action Comics #1, rated 6.0, which sold for $317,200. There are fewer than 100 copies left in existence and there are only two known copies with a rating of 8.0 or higher, making this Holy Grail of the comic art world just about as rare as the last son of Krypton himself.
