In the rock musical Next to Normal (book and lyrics by Brian Yorkey and music by Tom Kitt). A mother struggles with worsening bipolar disorder and the effect that her illness has on her family.
So what is “normal” and in the name of “normal”, can we discuss the newest season of Bravo’s The Real Housewives of NYC? This season has been nothing short of rollercoaster of emotions, a dash of chaos and more than a sprinkling of “trama drama” keeping things spicy and dicey.
So the question begs, have they gone too far? Reality television has come a long way and it would be a bit naïve to assume that “we” would not see a natural maturation in the process and production of the genre.
In nature, a change of seasons is expected - So should the topography of television be any different? What should be anticipated of these fabulicious ladies considering the most remarkable and entertaining part of being human is the perfection of imperfection.
At a recent book signing for Jill Zaran questions were flying. “Has she had surgery?”, “Why is she so cold?” Having met Jill on several occasions, I can speak only from experience. She looks great! Shame on you Jill for taking care of yourself - And as for cold? I have always felt warm and welcomed. Is she a strong-minded woman who has found her voice? Absolutely, but Susan B. Anthony worked rather hard so that the “Jill Zaran’s” of the world could carry the cause into the new millennium.
We even have a Countess and we all love a title. LuAnne married a Count so why don’t we just enjoy a little royalty in the mix and allow her to move on with her life. Kelly, Ramona, Bethany, Jill, Alex, Sonja - They each bring a certain sumpin’ sumpin’ to this big apple “dramality” that is nothing short of orgasmic.
So what is ordinary? My gal pal and newest Real Housewife, Jennifer Gilbert is refreshingly normal, so much so, that she may very well be the glue that holds this season's house of cards from tumbling down.
“I have never met group of women with more !@# issues” quipped Gilbert during a ladies night out. And she is correct - What has become of these groundbreakers? Have they taken it too far? I would argue with a resounding “hmmmm”! But all the editing in the world won’t take the reality out of these real housewives and whether normal, next to normal or over the top; I say Bravo to Bravo and keep on keeping ladies with special hats off to Jen Gilbert for being so uber fab and anchored in the wake of this storm we have come to know as The Real Housewives of New York City.
