Sarah Palin's daughter is in the news again, this time for making a chastity vow on The Oprah Winfrey Show. Bristol Palin told Oprah she plans to not have sex again until she is married.
Bristol and Sarah made an appearance via satelliite from Wasilla, Alaska on the Oprah show Friday, January 22. The pair were part of Oprah's Friday Live series and talked about their new roles in life--Bristol as a teenage, single mom and Sarah as a new Fox News commentator.
"I just think it's a goal to have, and other women should have that goal," Bristol said of her vow. She remarked she had been depressed since she gave birth to 13-month old, Tripp.
Winfrey questioned Bristol's statement, asking her, "But when you make the statement ... you don't think you're setting yourself up? Is that a realistic position?"
To which Bristol replied, "It's a realistic goal for myself. I have a kid in my life, and it's my full-time job now. I have this big, supportive family and stuff, but I just felt so alone."
Winfrey gave Bristol the chance to retract her statement, but mom Sarah jumped in with a surprising question of her own to Bristol.
"Does that mean you're going to marry pretty young?" Sarah asked her daughter. Bristol's quiet reply: "I don't know, Mom."
Sarah said she doesn't want to encourage her daughter to marry young, ""I'm telling her, don't think she has to find a man and marry young. The world is her oyster and she's going to be able to pursue an education and career and avocation opportunities without a man."
Arkansas fans of Sarah Palin can see Sarah live at Verizon Arena in Little Rock on February 16 at 7:30 pm. Sarah will be the keynote speaker for an Arkansas Republican Party event. Tickets can be purchased through Ticketmaster here.

I am not a fan of Sarah Palin but for the life of me why did Oprah treat Bristol Palin with such condesension? It really is none of Oprah's business if Bristol's goal is celibacy until marriage. Ms Winphrey needs to remember there is freedom of speech----- if you don't like someone's opinion ---that's your problem!
She has some nerve to want to diet after stuffing herself at the the buffet.. They are a complete joke. Stop looking for more publicity - take care of your baby & finish your education. Stop polluting the airwaves with your nonsense.
I love the way the so called "MIDDLE AMERICA / RIGHT WINGERS" get angry at home Oprah "treated Bristol" .. For trying to preach what she couldn't do- celibacy / keeping her legs closed. What she should do is go home and care for her boy - So he doesn't grow up to be like his father. And if she's so depressed she should consider therapy to help her overcome her so called pain /depression - I guess you can't hang out with friends & have unprotective sex without the risks of another kid. Grow up...
I Love Sarah Palin. She is America. She's got a good head on her shoulder. She hunts , LOVES JESUS and a good public speaker and is a perfect representive. I think she should be given a show on FOX NEWS.. She's made mistakes just like you and I . He daughter has to just like many other young Americans and would be the perfect representive for kids around the world. So, she went behind her parents back and slept with her high school boyfriend, got knocked up and is now preaching what she couldn't do herself and is depressed about having to talk about it insead of hanging with friends and drinking like the Bush Twins ... Oh bell.. D-OH!!! Keep it going Sarah your the best exable of a proper mother for us in Middle America . You've got my vote for 2010 !
Bristol Palin made herself look like a complete idiot. Oprah is right that it is not anyones business if Bristol is having sex or not and all she can say is "it's a good goal to have.." Yes abstinence is a good goal except when you already have a 13 month old. Bristol needs to grow up take care of her child and stop fame whoring herself all over the media.
I think it's a good goal for Bristol to have. I wish more young women would do the same. (The real hypocrites, by the way, are the people who think it's just fine for teenagers to have sex, providing them with condoms and easy access to abortion, yet criticize Bristol because she had a baby. The Scarlet Letter is not out-dated, I guess).
