Mad Men will start running commercials that look like what the TV viewers of the 1960's would see during commercial breaks. This is a great idea considering the show is about advertising. The Ponds Cold Cream Company could not have gotten better exposure than it did last week on Mad Men.
The commercials will be advertising products available during that decade, according to the New York Times. Six products are slated for the commercials. Dove will be the first commercial we will see followed by Breyers, Hellmann’s, Klondike, Suave and Vaseline. These are all products of the Unilever Brand.
See how they tried to sell you soap, ice cream, mayo, ice cream bars, shampoo, and good old Vaseline during the time when most homes had only one black and white TV set. This new concept will have six vignette-style commercials and it sounds like we will be shown the creative workings going into designing the commercials with a trio of "mad men" in an ad agency.
The New York Times gives an example of what we will see. Two Mad Men, (not any of the shows characters) will be mulling over what to do for an ad for Dove soap. In walks the secretary and says something about her face being so soft from using Dove, because she sees the soap on the table. This becomes the Ah-Ha moment and this is what the Mad Men use for their commercial.
Commercial are annoying unless you are watching the ones during the Super Bowl Game. This sounds like it can be as entertaining as Super Bowl Sunday commercials.
Mad Men in NYC would come to the Connecticut countryside for a weekend get-away. In the premiere of season 4 Mad Men, Henry tells Betty he is taking her away for a romantic weekend in Essex, Connecticut to the Griswold Inn.
The owners of the Griswold Inn had no idea their establishment would be mentioned and from that 10 second sentence, they became famous nationwide overnight. Geoffry Paul, one of the three brothers that own the Griswold Inn said that Mad Men was authentic in pin pointing the Griswold Inn as a favorite of Mad Men during the 60's.
The Griswold Inn was indeed filled with New York Mad Men and New York businessmen with their wives on the weekends. Many celebrities stayed at the Inn during that decade also. One big name was Frank Sinatra. The Inn, was a favorite New England destination in the 1960's and still is today.
