Though the critics have sharpen their claws, movie audiences have sink their teeth into New Moon, as the second part of the immensely popular Twilight Saga took the top spot at the weekend box office with $140.7 million dollars, making it the third biggest opening, according to The Hollywood Reporter -- with The Dark Knight remaining first ($158.4 million), follow by Spider-Man 3 ($151.1 million).
New Moon picks up where part one left off, as the relationship between supercouple Edward (Robert Pattinson) and Bella (Kristen Stewart) -- aka Edella -- starts to defanged when the soulful vampire decides to leave his mortal beloved for the sake of her protection. However, he returns when her life is being threatened by both werewolves and vampires, but that's only the beginning. Despondent over her immortal true love, Bella finds solace and friendship with budding wolfie Jacob (Taylor Lautner), who develops feelings for her.
This isn't the first time that an heroine is in the middle of a supernatural love triangle, so let's take a look at a few of them:
Buffy/Angel/Spike (Buffy, The Vampire Slayer, WB & UPN (1997-2003) & Angel, 1999-2004, WB): The rocky mentor-student relationship/bromance between two vampire champions that have their humanities restored, and the Slayer that put a stake on both of their hearts.
Jack Ramsey/Livvie "Olivia" Locke/Caleb Morley (Port Charles, 1997-2003): The GH spinoff went into Dark Shadows territory in the summer of 2001, and hit their stride with the third book Tainted Love. Two vampires -- one good, one evil -- fighting for the heart and soul of the one woman neither one can't get out of their minds.
Vicki/Henry/Mike (Blood Ties, 2007, Lifetime Network): Ex-cop turned private investigator Vicki Nelson has police detective Mike Celluci to keep her cool during the day, while she has 480-year-old vampire Henry Fitzroy to keep her warm during the night.
Stefan/Elena/Damon (The Vampire Diaries, 2009-present, CW): The relationship between the Salvatore brothers is similar to that of Wolverine and Sabretooth from the X-Men, as both compete for the woman that resembles the one that started their century-long bitter feud.
Production on the third book Eclipse has been recently completed and is set to debut in June 2010.
