Obama school speech controversy, boycott cries over Obama school speech September 8th due to email

Obama school speech detractors say keep your kids home

Searches for "Obama school, Obama school address, Obama September 8, Obama speech, Obama school video" have been swelling ever since President Obama's planned speech for September 8, 2009 -- to be streamed live from the White House that day to school students -- received backlash in an email encouraging a "Keep Your Kid Home from School Day" on the day of Obama's speech.

That controversy is erupting largely due to fears of exactly what President Obama may say to the students -- but reports of the planned speech only display what seems may be a speech encouraging children to get an education and stay in school.

This unexpected backlash at what many assume is a simple school speech has left educators deciding on different activities for school children to perform -- the ones whose parents specifically state that they don't want their offspring watching the Obama school speech.

Teachers in schools across the nation were excellent about showing children the historic inauguration on January 20, 2009 -- and they'll no doubt do the same to accommodate whatever choice parents make on Obama school speech day, September 8, 2009.

For some reason the January 20, 2009 "I Pledge" video about Obama is making the news, too, due to some students just now seeing the video:

Parents -- what about you?

Will you send your children to school on Obama school speech day?

My child is going to school. Those of you that are keeping your child home, should take them out of that "socialist" program called Public School. There are plenty of private schools available.

This mom is absolutely going to allow my children to hear from the president, and then we're going to speak, as a family, about what was said and why we as their parents either agree or disagree. In this rather rancorous age of Us vs. Them, I believe it's important that my kids learn how to relate to people whose opinions are different, and listen calmly to what others have to say. How will this world operate if our kids never develop the art of productive debate? They also need to understand how anyone can add subliminal spin to a speech, no matter what "side" they're coming from. Listen critically, but don't stop listening. Just my two cents.

My child attends a private school. I hope she gets to see the President's speech. If not I will record it. It is only right to be respectful to what our President has to say. Children included. That is how it was when we were children. We need to teach respect. I remember making a pledge to Nancy Regan that I would not do drugs. Did anyone make a stink about that? How do we know what he is going to say before he says it. Let the man talk. Then, if you do not like what you heard. You can grip about it.

My child will not be in school. If any of you care to look at the curriculum packet that has been sent to schools with pre-programmed questions you would see that this is blatent propaganda being used by Mr. Obama. While I believe respect should be given to the President I will NEVER be a servant for him. Pay closer attention to the message that is being broadcast here people.

My child attends a public school and will not be attending on the 8th. As parents we feel that when politics, of any nature, enter the class room and when only one side is expressed with no balance that the line between education and indoctrination has been crossed. We feel this way regardless of what polical party, or race the sitting President is. The right way for him to handle this is to speak to our children while speaking to Congress on Wednesday night. Invite children to watch with their parents so that the parents can answer the questions that they may have, not the educators.

My child is going to school. However, I am attending as well. I want to be able to discuss it with my child. I may not agree with Obama's methods, but it will allow me the opportunity to point out certain things that my child may not be aware of. It will be a learning experience for my child. My child will not be writing an essay though as Obama has instructed the schools. That is just ridiculous. If he wants assistance running the country he can ask the taxpayers. After all, we pay his salary - He serves the country we don't serve him.

I wouldn't have a problem with the speech, but they are sending out curriculum packages. If teachers could just let the kids talk about what they heard, disagreements they have, etc. without judgment or punishment it would be fantastic. However, we all know that many teachers will voice their opinion and push their agendas on the kids (whether its pro or con).
Right after the president was elected one of the teachers at school handed out Obama buttons and pencils. One of the kids in the classroom told the teacher he did not want a pencil or button because he wouldn't wear the button or use the pencil. When the teacher asked him why not, he said he did not support or agree with Obama's positions on several issues. He did not want Obama for president. The teacher became outraged because SHE DID support Obama (and had done so openly in class previously). The kid refused to accept the gifts, and the teacher got extremely upset sending the boy to the principals office.

Knowing how polorizing this Administration is, is what has my hairs standing up about this speech. I am keeping my daughter out for this reason and to let the White House know that I DO NOT think this is appropriate at all. Nacy Regan's message was just say no to drugs and nothing more. For those of you who do not like what I am doing, let me ask you this. What would you have done if President Geroge W. Bush wanted to pipe in this same kind of speech to our children in their classroom back in 2001 or at all?

Everybody keep crying about a speech that is meant to be a positive for students. If Bush was gonna give a speech to kids about a positve message related to education I am quite confident that any rational, secure, and pragmatic human would support be it Republican or Democrat. I mean really people are we this scared and infantile about a man saying some stuff to kids that will give them a memory for the future. Indifferent at the very least is what you should be. Outraged, no thanks, Look At the divide We live in Now. It's disgusting, childish, and embarassing to even think that people think like this.
Send your kids to school, make them watch it, let it soak in, they'll make their own judgements based upon this. It's real life. Quit crying and being so oppositional. Cry, Cry, Cry,. Both Sides wanna propagate a spin toward their own beliefs publicly in the media but in my view the Republicans, or I should say the uptight rightwingers need to chill the frick out.

I have just read the Department of Education's suggested activities to be used with both K-6 and 7-12 students before, during and after the President's speech. If there is anyone who thinks that asking our children to reflect on their personal responsibilities, goals or persistence is objectionable or indoctrination, please go to your child's school during the President's speech and take personal responsibility for their activities for the duration of the speech. Do not expect the school to provide diversionary activities while the rest of the student body does what they do every day in every classroom across America - listen to information and think about it.

Kids need to stop playing games and watching TV and do something worthwhile in their lives. If someone wants to send out a message that it is better to be someone who does rather than someone who does not, then I am for it. We are becoming AMERICAN'Ts, in a few decades we will end up not being top dog in the world anymore. Everyone else out there in the world has been catching up in education, infrastructure, manufacturing, and international friends. Our international relationships and friendships seem to be at an all time low. As an educator, I have no objections to the content of the President's speech. This message has been delivered by teachers, principals, school boards, and parents alike. However, I feel that there is no need for the President to engage in such an address and it is insulting to me that he feels the need to do so. I have already given this talk to ALL of of my students this year, and every year. What is also concerning is the fact that education is a power held by the states - NOT the federal government. I realize that the message of the President has nothing to do with "I am the superintendent-in-chief" but by this proposed action he is posturing himself in that way. He is also posturing himself as everyone's "Dad" in the country which while noble in some way, is NOT the role of the President. By performing this address he is assuming that he is a role model for all children. THAT is the issue people have, not the content of his speech, but the social posturing that comes with it...

There is nothing controversial about a president/administration addressing education, even in a very direct way... isn't it fairly standard?

I went to school during the Reagan years, an administration that was very interactive with the youth. Where were the cries of "brainwashing fasco-marxi-communist" then?

Even Bush jr.spent time in classrooms, unless you REALLY think those 1st graders were teaching him to read the morning of 9/11.
