The Los Angles Times reported the death of sports writer Mike Penner.
Penner was pronounced dead Friday at a local hospital.There has been no official autopsy or cause of death report that has been released.
It is rumored that Mike Penner is believed to have committed suicide. He was 52 years old.
Mike Penner worked for the past 25 years as a sports writer for the paper. The Times sports editor Mike James stated,"Mike was one of the most talented writers I've ever worked with,capable of reporting on any number of topics with great wit and style. He was a very gentle man and will be greatly missed".
The Times editor Ross Stanton spoke of Penner saying Mike Penner respected our readers a great deal, enough to share with them a very personal journey".
On April the 2007 Mike Penner revealed his journey when he wrote a story for the Times headlined "Old Mike ,New Christine",in which he revealed that he would be taking a vacation and that when he returned to work as a sports writer it would be as a woman named Christine Daniels.
Penner wrote "I am a transsexual sports writer. It has taken more than 40 years, a million tears and hundreds of hours of soul-wrenching therapy for me to work up the courage to type those words".
The sports world was shaken by Penner's announcement but his bosses at the Times were supportive.
Mike Penner did return to work after that vacation as Christine Daniels not only continuing to work on the paper as a sports writer but ,also writing a blog titled "Woman In transition" detailing his experiences.
Penner revealed that making the public transition was the hardest thing he ever had to do. At the time of his announcement Penner was married but declined to speak of his family situation. He said that he was undergoing female hormone treatments but also declined in saying whether he planned to undergo a sex change operation.
Mike Penner eventually dropped his blog and returned to writing under the name of Mike Penner. His last column appeared on November the 15th 2009.
