Last week Star Trek hit stores on Blu Ray and DVD, the week before that G.I. Joe The Rise of Cobra was released on DVD and sold 3,355,303 units in just two weeks. Transformers Revenge of the Fallen in its four weeks on the shelves sold 8,082,694 units, that’s about 288,667 DVDs sold for this one movie a day. Three massivlely popular movies all based upon TV shows of the past.

The influx of pop culture of the past is coming to the present through remakes and new feature films. This year we had Will Ferrel’s Land of the Lost, based on the television series of the same name that ran for only two years, 1974 – 1976. Steve Carell had Get Smart last year, the show however ran 14 years ago in 1965 for four years until 1969. The youth of today often have no idea that the movies they are seeing today existed once before let alone had a television series previously.

With all of this rehashing and rewriting of the classics of the past what is to be considered the pop culture of today? Will reality shows and their stars, like the Gosslins, or the Kardashian's have movies made about them 20 years from now? Should we look forward to an animated versions of Brad and Angelina on Saturday mornings, “Where on Earth are Brad and Angelina Adopting a Kid?”

Classics like Star Trek, G.I. Joe and Transformers have shown Hollywood that things were done right 20 years ago, and if you take that culture and regurgitate it back up, the youth of the past/the adults of today will pay to see it. Not only when it comes out in theatres but society today likes owning the movies they enjoy. DVD collections are not those of the collector, they are common practice in most homes and with numbers like those above bringing in millions of dollars we can look forward to more and more remakes standing along side the originals on our DVD shelves.

Brilliantly put, sir. It is truly the age of the Remake and the "Reimagining".
