SAN FRANCISCO, CA -- The psychological trap of incumbency is the pervasive illusion or self-delusion of invincibility.
In simpler terms, without competition, incumbents become annoyingly arrogant. Such is the case of the U.S. Senator from California --- Senator Barbara Boxer.
But now Boxer is facing a possible formidable opponent --- Prominent businesswoman Carly Fiorina, who is within striking distance in a recent poll.
Fiorina, a former Hewlett-Packard CEO, in a Rasmussen Reports telephone survey released July 24 is trailing by only 4 percentage points behind in a hypothetical head-to-head with the three-term incumbent. The poll put Boxer's support in such a face-off at only 45 percent, with 7 percent of survey respondents saying they're undecided.
Boxer’s arrogance was demonstrated twice recently.
Harry C. Alford, the president and CEO of the National Black Chamber of Commerce, accused Boxer this month of racially condescending to him during an Environment and Public Works Committee hearing. Alford, whose testimony Republicans had sought to oppose a climate change bill working its way through Congress, took offense to Boxer quoting supporting statements from the NAACP and 100 Black Men group. (Video)
"I'm the National Black Chamber of Commerce and you're trying to put up some other black group to pit against me," he angrily told Boxer. "As an African-American and a veteran of this country, I take offense to that."
In June, Boxer rebuked an Army Brigadier general for calling her "ma'am."
"You know, do me a favor," an irritated Boxer told Brig. Gen. Michael Walsh, with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. "Could you say senator instead of ma'am? ... It's just a thing, I worked so hard to get that title, so I'd appreciate it." (Video)
Don’t be surprise if Senator Boxer doesn’t re-learn some Senate etiquette in the coming weeks. Nothing shapes up an incumbent like a healthy competitor, especially another strong, accomplished woman. In fact, some of the most powerful women I've met are those who have fought and won against breast cancer. Fiorina is such a woman.

oh please...rasmussen poll? Scotty Rasmussen has been in the tank for Republicans for twenty years now...give me a field poll or epic or gallup and we can have a conversation...he was 10 point off on Obama until he changed his numbers the last three days...
Anybody, from a porn star to a drunken homeless person could do a better job for California and the US than ma'am Boxer. Barbara Boxer is a lying check kiting good for nothing lowlife egotistical politican. We need her GONE!
Oh you didn't even try to make sense with this propaganda! Harry C. Alford made a total fool out of himself at that hearing, and has only the support of the Republicans and corporate interests who bought and paid for him.
And the first thing that's going to come out about Fiorina is the way that Hewlitt Packard employees CHEERED when they found out that she'd been dumped as CEO. Her miserable performance at HP will come back to haunt her.
Barbara Boxer maybe evil, but Fiorina is the worst. She laid of thousands of Americans in the favor of Indians. She is the worst of the worst. Both of them Barbara Boxer and Carly Fiorina should be politicans. They sell Americans to the highest bidder so easily.
Clearly the punditry is in action now! Who cares who does the polls - Boxer has been vulnerable for years because she is arrogant, self centered, and wrong - even for the most liberal of states. Carly at least understands business people. It's time to get rid of the "let them eat cake mentality".
I hope Boxer is in trouble, but Carly Fiorina is not what she needs to worry about...
She is a c u n t!
