I endorse Hector Torres for state senate in the 43rd district- Curious Carter Conway finance info

Vote for Hector Torres for state senate in the 43rd district. His opponent (Joan Carter Conway) endorses Patricia Jessamy and is funded by many different entities that I would not want to be associated with. Today I received an email detailing many of the specifics behind Carter Conway's campaign financiers. You can read the entire word document that came with the email here.

Here are some quick points from the word document I received:

  • "$71,000 from development industry and companies who often receive multi-million dollar government contracts
  • $38,000 from liquor industry & problem liquor stores
  • $17,000 from LLCs and LLPs, entities used to avoid campaign finance limits and hide identity of donors
  • SUPPORTERS ALSO INCLUDE:
  • G. Sapperstien, convicted of bribery and stealing $3.3 million from city schools
  • W. D. Stoffregen, convicted of racketeering with a MD State Senator
  • Linden Bar & Liquors
  • Sugar Hill Tavern, closed for noise violations and serving minors
  • Norma Jean’s, strip club and location of a fatal stabbing
  • Kenneth Jackson, notorious drug-and-gun felon and strip club owner
  • Jack Gresser, distributor of millions worth of pornographic materials and owner of multiple strip clubs in Baltimore"

Good bye Joan Carter Conway you needed to be voted out of office a long time ago. It is time to clean house in Maryland and Baltimore politics. I'm a concern citizen and I approve this message.

Let me get this out of the way first. I am a supporter of Hector Torres in his bid to unseat Joan Carter Conway. Nonetheless, I am troubled by some of the material in the e-mail that I read regarding Ms. Conway's source of finances. As an architect I am particularly interested in seeing Historic Tax Credits continued, as well as some of the state's regulations having to do with the selection of architects for new and renovated buildings. I am interested in these things for what I think are the right reasons and not because I expect to be rewarded by a politician were I to donate to his or her campaign on the basis of their support for those things I just mentioned. That is why when I see on the list of contributors to Ms. Conway's campaign architects and engineers, I am concerned that there is an implication on your part that this is somehow dirty money and that those firms were rewarded with state contracts solely because of those contributions. Architects do business with the state and are awarded contracts based on merit, experience and proposed fees. I do not see where a paltry $300 or $500 contribution to a single individual would then produce a hefty design contract. It just doesn't compute. As I said at the beginning, I support Hector Torres but you do not do him a service by trotting out implications in lieu of hard facts based on something other than what is, at best, circumstantial evidence. Your treatment of the direct sale of wine from out of state to individuals, for instance, is much more compelling as evidence of poor judgment on the part of Ms. Conway. More information like that would be much more helpful to Mr. Torres.
