Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger withdraws support for offshore drilling in California
California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger
(R-CA) is no longer willing to support drilling for oil off the shores of his state. The decision will further aggravate California’s budget shortfall, but Schwarzenegger does not believe the trade off is worth the risk.
"If I have a choice between the $100 million and what I see in the Gulf of Mexico, I'd rather just figure out how to make up for that $100 million." He said.
Revenue from a new drilling platform deal with PXP oil company would have been used to shore-up the budget for state parks.
The 14 year lease was to be located in the Tranquillon Ridge field, off the coast of Santa Barbara.
Schwarzenegger said, “All of you have seen, when you turn on your televisions, the devastation in the Gulf. I'm sure that they were also assured that it is safe to drill."
