Dems trying to strike a deal with GOP on unemployment benefits extension

Just two days after Senator Sherrod Brown (D-OH)  held a news conference criticizing his Republican counterparts for holding up a bill extending jobless benefits, the Democratic leadership is now attempting to make a deal with the GOP to get the legislation passed.
On Wednesday night, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) filed for cloture on the measure.  Through cloture, the Senate can place a time limit on considering a bill and possibly overcome a potential filibuster.  Several Republican members have offered amendments to the legislation, which have, in effect, kept it from moving.  Democrats are feeling the urge to get the unemployment benefits extension to the President's desk with hundreds of thousands of Americans literally losing their benefits with each passing month.
Now Reid and his colleague Senator Max Baucus (D-MT) are working to engage Republican members by being receptive to amendments Republicans have been asking for, in particular, renewing the tax credit for first time homebuyers through 2010.  Senator Johnny Isakson (R-GA) has been a strong proponent of including the tax credit renewal in the unemployment extension legislation.  He also wants to remove the requirement that only first time homebuyers receive the tax credit.  However Reid and Baucus are not quite willing to go that far.  Instead the two ranking members, while supporting the continuation of the $8,000 credit, only want it to remain in effect until April 1.  After that time, the tax credit would decrease incrementally throughout the rest of 2010.
If the Democrats can reach an agreement on the tax credit language then the unemployment benefits legislation has a greater chance of moving more quickly to the floor for a vote.

Lets see, banks took bailout money to save badly run operations. Now, the government wants to cut pay up to 90%.

Ok with that thinking, we give the government money with our taxes, and they are diong a pretty poor job of running the government for the people. How bout cutting their pay and staffs by 90%? See how they like it.

This is just wrong. Holding up benefits for Americans that truely need it in this bad job market. The jobs simply aren't out there. Why make more people suffer for somthing they had no control over. It makes absolutely no sense. Pass this bill.

Passing the $7.5 billion for Pakistan took no time at all. It is easier to help other people in the world than your own people in the US. Debating a Healthcare bill which will not be in effect for years is also more important then helping people who are loosing everything they own right now. Where are your priorities? Wake Up!! Take care of your own first!!

Yep, harmon, the GOP got things done... and now the Dems have to clean up after it.

I wish articles would stop saying things like "by the end of the year" and "each month." The fact is that even in the states eligible for the most weeks of benefits (79), thousands of people PER DAY have been exhausting them beginning back in AUGUST!!

This legislation should have been taken care of before the August recess. I sent them emails to alert them to this fact in July, but did they listen? OF COURSE NOT!

    Dear Senator's
I am sorry for being such a burden on society. I am sorry for creating this recession. I am sorry for only being able to work and pay taxes for 35 years before I lost my job. I am sorry you have to trouble yourself with another bill for unemployment so I can try and stay warm. I am sorry that you have to debate longer days and you are now putting in 20 hour weeks. So, to make up for it take off most of Nov and Dec. I think you deserve 10 weeks of vacation a year. I think I am the only one having trouble or you would be in a hurry if there was a crisis. One more thing that I am sorry for when I file my taxes for 2009 I won’t be paying any because I had no income. Please don't be mad at me.

Whoever said Bush would have extended unemployment, is wrong! Bush 43 has fought every unemployment extension, except one! The Republicans believe that if you give extensions, it increases unemployment. They have said that for years. The reason that works, is because if you do not give extensions people disappear and are no longer counted by the labor department. Hence unemployment appears to drop. The only extension that George Bush did not oppose was the 7 week extension he gave last December. It was only for 7 week and that was after rushing through the bailout money for Wall Street! During the recession in his first term the Democrats fought hard to get one extension of 13 weeks.
The President has already said he will sign the bill as soon as it hits desk. The Republicans are adding amendments to the bill at the expense of hungry people. What is important now is what is going to happen after the extension runs out! Where are the jobs! Certain sates have reeducation funds. Apply!

Rhonda, if know anything about legislation, you would know that just because you are the President you can't do anything, you must have bills passed through the House and Congress before a bill is passed and signed. The President can only make suggests and hope and pray that his ideas pass if not there is nothing he can do, so please don't blame the President, if the DEMO don't have 60 votes to pass a bill then the bill won't pass and that is that. That's why President Clintion healthcare bill didn't pass because he didn't have the votes. He had good intentions but if you don't have the enough votes then bills don't pass and if the GOP has 60 seats then forget about we wouldn't have the 3 extentions and we wouldn't be getting a 4th if they were in power.

The GOP Senators only have themselves to blame for going down in flames by their consistant stalling tactics in the US Senate. Senate Democrats will this week try to make progress on other initiatives that have been moving at a snails pace due to the stalling tactics of Senate Republicans.

Senate Democrats are complaining and rightfull so, that an extension of unemployment benefits, a major Pentagon policy measure, the remaining spending bills and a series of nominations are being slowed by Senate Republicans who are interested in keeping Congress tied up for their own personal gain and deny Democrats any successes at legislation.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev)filed a procedural motion Wednesday night on legislation that would extend federal unemployment benefits to long term unemployed people for up to 20 weeks and will hold a procedural vote next Tuesday afternoon to proceed to legislation extending unemployment insurance nationwide. Things are fundamentally broken here. Not sure what else to say about it, except it is. There is a time when saying anything about a situation will do nothing, and these are one of those times. All I can conclude now is the GOP doesn't care about people in need, and their attaching riders to the bill, and arguing for anything BUT running up the deficit, shows this.

In regards to job hunting, less than 15% of all jobs are listed in the help wanted section.

So why is it if we're all unemployed and out of money and patients don't we all just stop it all by not paying anything. So what if the car company comes and get the car we need to find a job. So what if the house we rely on for shelter gets taken away and who really cares if all the credit card company's go under? I know the GOP does!!!! Think if everyone just stops paying money to everyone else and takes care of themselves? The whole economy would come to a grinding halt!!!!

Soon there will be many people flooding shelters, Salvation armies, welfare offices and then the country will have the worst problem ever since this GREATER DEPRESSION took over life as we know it. I think that if no one shopped for the holidays it would wake America up to all of us who just gave up. I know there won't be a Christmas tree up in my house this year. I hope all of our government is ready for the brakes to be put on this year by the very people who can do it. Power to the regular people in the US

The person on the other end of the phone was speechless and all of a sudden came up with many ways to help, go figure!!! I kept saying "no come get it, I don't care" I'd rather walk then put up with this anymore. I'd rather go hunt for my food, give up my Tv than let anyone have the power to push me around. And that's what the Senate is doing to all of us by delaying the unemployment vote.

So anyway the loan company told me they could put as many as 6 payments to the back of the loan rather than take my car. Watch how fast the senate responds once the loan companies start bitching that Americans are fighting back. Bet they'll pass it real quick because once it spreads it could easily collapse the economy faster than it has so far.

And you wonder why people go into banks and schools and post offices with guns. The government gives us no other choice so by making our voices heard to the news outlets they will have to make it headlines.

Mr. president I would love to buy Windows 7 for $200.00 but I'm forced to make this horrible choice, feed my family with 3/1.00 mac and cheese or buy Windows 7 to use on my PC without any electric to run it. hmm I think I'll choose food this time. sorry Mr. Gates but you'll have to survive on your 46 BILLION dollars this year because the government just doesn't care about any of us anymore .
