Arizona residents want it both ways: tough immigration law and amnesty

A majority of the citizens of Arizona are supporters of SB1070, the tough new law that allows police to ask someone about immigration status with "reasonable suspicion" they are in the country illegally. Fifty five percent favor the law which will take affect on Thursday, while 36% oppose it. About two thirds of Arizonans want tougher security at the border.

Even more Arizona residents want illegal immigrants to stay if they have no criminal record, according to the same poll by the Arizona Republic. WestGroup Research found that 62% want amnesty for illegal immigrants who contribute to society, while only 31% want illegal immigrants to go home to their native lands.

The poll suggests Arizona voters would like to consider a more multifaceted solution to the immigration issue. The poll of 616 adults was conducted between Jun 30 and July 12 of this year, with a 3.89% margin of error.

Utah's first immigration summit, held last week in Salt Lake City began the conversation about how to solve the problem of illegal immigration in the state. Ideas being considered range from a law similar to the one passed in Arizona, to guest worker programs. Utah Governor Gary Herbert has asked a diverse group of Utahns to listen to each other and consider a solution that is right for Utah.

Not sure where this poll was taken and what the AZ Republic is trying to acomplish but I live in AZ and do not want illegals granted amnesty. The AZ Republic is trying to and has been trying to report one side of the story. Even when they report the other side it leans to the left. Illegals are criminals and should not be rewarded. How has any illegal contributed to society? How are they paying their share in taxes. By using a stolen ID? They flood the hospitals and dont pay the bills. This poll is bogus and I would put money on it that the people that participated in the poll does not represent the majority of people against illegal immigration. There is no problem with legal immigration and those people should be the only ones receiving praise. Illegals have been abusing the system for years so now we will just give them amnesty and it makes it ok. NO, Obama only wants votes.

Anybody who regularly reads the rag known as the Arizona Republic knows that this very biased newspaper has been shoving Amnesty down the our throats for years and years. I challenge these findings that 60 plus want illegal foreign nationals to have a free ride after breaking how many of our laws? Identity theft, health care theft, ed theft, welfare and foodstamp theft..sure these are exactly the kind of people who embody what made America great. AZ Repbublic is not a news agency, it is opinon based blogging.

I think the media has been publishing hog wash like this for a few days now. Maybe at one time Americans might have seen some compasionate light at the end of the tunnel, but the illegals made some very bad mistakes. Giving Americans the finger regarding law enforcement, waving their own flag, bringing lawsuits against their victims and abusing our medical and educational system, not to mention Medicaide for their children (they just can't seem to be reasonable regarding how many children they have for us to support.)

So this is no longer about compassion, it's about the law. The illegals pushed it and pushed it and pushed it. Hired their own lawyers, refused to speak or even try to speak English, taught their kids that American kids were the enemy and that the western states rightfully belonged to them.

I'd say they made some very obvious mistakes and now is the time to pony up and go back to Mexico. We're done -

I read something similar to this on the arizona republic news site. The interesting thing about this article is they aren't allowing anyone to comment on this story. I'm hoping someone writes a book about how unbiased their coverage of this bill "really" is.

Even E-Verify, a durable enforcement tool designed in President Bush's administration has been conceded by Nevada's Harry Reid, who tried to thrash it in the Senate chamber. As an outsider I comprehend nothing but different presidencies, either cutting subsidies or just plain lying about immigration enforcement. America! We have a colossal problem that has become a national hemorrhaging of our hospitals, schools and welfare benefits being consumed by illegal recipients. Yet the federal government has failed dismally in its responsibility to defend this country from enemies domestic and foreign. Your vote is important to Washington’s Senate and Congressman, so bombard them that you are adamantly against any type of Amnesty. You want them to secure the border and do it now, because Mexico’s blood bath could easily erupts here. Call the Washington switchboard at 202-224-3121.

On July 31, 2008, 14-year-old Ivan Miranda, San Francisco; In October 2008, Phoenix, Arizona, Shane Figueroa; February 3, 2009, Denver, Colorado leaving three people dead and two injured. By no means is this the whole list, but if you dig deep on the internet you will be amazed or more likely furious of the lives taken by illegal aliens; specially drunken drivers. These deaths caused by gang members, drunken drivers and multiple border entry, habitual criminal aliens, never become public knowledge. Only the deaths of illegal aliens seem to get thorough publicity from the far left press over the years. Another statistic is thousands of incurable business owners who evade the law, knowingly hiring illegal workers and having never joined other felons in prison? An additional fact that the border fence was never, ever completed and still remains a single length fence, not—TWO--as existed in the original 2006 Secure Border Act.

Some of the other main American cities are Chicago; Santa Ana; San Diego; Salt Lake City; Dallas; Houston; Austin; Detroit; Jersey City; Minneapolis; Miami; Portland; Maine; Baltimore; Seattle; Portland; New Haven; and Washington, D.C. These cities have adopted "sanctuary" ordinances banning municipal employees and law enforcement from inquiring people about their immigration status. In the foul shadow of this controversial rule has arisen, the deaths of innocent citizens at the hands of illegal aliens that the Liberal media prefers to keep silent and out of the headlines. Same as the federal government conveniently overlooking Sanctuary States and cities, because California cities such as San Francisco and Los Angeles, Denver, Colorado, New York City are all in contravention to the 1986 immigration act. Sanctuary cities policies were first adopted in the Liberal metropolis of in 1979 Los Angeles, to prevent police from inquiring about the immigration status of arrestees. "Special order 40," states: "Officers shall not initiate police action with the objective of discovering the alien status of a person. Officers shall neither arrest nor book persons for violation of title 8, section 1325 of the United States Immigration code (Illegal Entry)." Equally to blame and even promote the law are numerous Governors, Mayors and an assortment of Police Chiefs and city managers.

The majority of the American people are probing this simple question? If the enactment of SB 1070, Arizona's policing law, is a non-negotiable interference of Federal law relating to states right to protect itself. 1. Does this law causes "irreparable harm? 2. Does it circumvent federal law? These are the arguments of the Department of Justice having filed this complaint in federal court. As I perceive it, the only person who comes under suspicion, is people who are avoiding coming into contact with a police officer. If you happened to get pulled over, they are first going to run the cars plates. Then cross referencing with your driver’s license, then if everything falls into line with names and addresses and no bench warrant is out for your arrest--then you drive away. The state of Arizona has built SB1070 on the foundations of federal law, so what’s the big issue here? The material issue has absolutely nothing to do with the "Rule of Law?" and everything to do with politics.

People normally wants to believe what they think is right for their cause. No matter how right the column is, they will still refuse to accept the reality. I call them blind morons. But if you publish damning statistics like unFAIR and Rassmutin biased pollster, they'll be jumping up and down the streets, their keypads smoking in speed to inform their fellows in glee. OH, America, what has become of your genetically improved nazi offspring citizens?

Once again the AZ Republic isn't allowing anyone to comment in regards to the opinion piece they published as news. Don't take my word for it google their website. If it was a unbiased report on the facts why aren't any comments allowed. This article even allows comments.

the only thing the Arizona law interferes with is the Non-Enforcement of the immigration laws. To only try to deport "criminal" aliens while ignoring the vast majority of people illegally in the country is a policy of negligence on the part of the federal government. We are still waiting the enforcement promised to us back in 1986 in exchange for the "one time only" amnesty of 1986. No Amnesty.
