President seeks $500,000 for ads to rebut Palin

Sarah Palin waves to crowd during book signing appearance in Michigan

Another e-mail from info@barackobama.com hit my inbox yesterday.  The subject:  Sarah Palin.

It begins: "Right now, Sarah Palin is on a highly publicized, nationwide book tour, attacking President Obama and his plan for health reform at every turn."

The mail goes on to say "It's dangerous. Remember, this is the person who coined the term "Death Panels" -- and opened the flood gates for months of false attacks by special interests and partisan extremists."

"Whatever lie comes next will be widely covered by the media, then constantly echoed by right-wing attack groups and others who are trying to defeat reform."

"So we're setting a big goal: $500,000 in the next week to help push back against Sarah Palin and her allies.....We need to be prepared. And we're counting on you help. Can you chip in $5?"

So it has come to this:  a sitting president soliciting donations for counter-attack ads on a former VP nominee hockey mom that most of the mainstream media rediculed in the last election.  If her claims are so outrageous, why bother spending the money to respond?  Maybe because a lot of people are listening to her, and many of them might just agree with what she is saying.

I don't think it helps the conservative cause to exaggerate the health care bill's possible impact (there are enough awful things in the bill right there in black and white)....the Obama e-mail states that Palin claimed on Rush Limbaugh that Americans "could face jail time as punishment" if they didn't buy health insurance.  This is technically true, but only because punishment for tax evasion could include jail time; and one would have to not only fail to buy insurance but also fail to pay the 2.5% income tax in lieu that the bill requires, and have a judge or jury hand down a jail sentence.

But in any case, hyping the bill's possible impact with extreme statements just gives the bill's supporters ammunition:  when the wilder claims are shot down all of the conservative's arguments become suspect.

My advice:  don't listen to either Obama, Pelosi, Reid or Palin.  Question everything they say because both sides have a lot invested in the outcome and they both want to be "right."  After all, both Obama and Palin are running for president.

Logical and imperative points to make. Still, I choose to listen to Sarah because I sincerely believe that her her deepest investment does not root in personal successes, but in the success of her values, which are genuine.

First, the way I hear it, Palin is RIGHT. I even heard Nancy Pelosi SAY the very same thing when asked about it weeks ago. I suggest you DON'T tell your readers NOT to listen to anyone. I think we can make that choice on our own. Some will choose to listen to Palin... others will choose to listen to Pelosi. I choose... PALIN! Moreover... apparently it is now acceptable contributions in order to enforce his every whim. I can't believe I'm in America!

Sorry your advice holds no merit! Palin speaks the truth as it is written in the bill. The O-P-R team has done nothing but lie about everything! Primarily because they don't even know what is actually in there. They make it up as they go and feel justified in using whatever means necessary to advance agendas! Sad that so many buy whatever they sell.

A lot of people who follow Palin are not very intelligent or educated. She makes a connection with these people because they have a lot in common. That is where the danger lies because they are hicks like she is. I'm sure Obama doesn't give her a second thought; it's just some of his supporters.

Sister Sarah can do more damage to Obamacare with a tweet than most politicians spending a week on TV talking head shows. She is a threat to the beltway bozos in both parties of corruption. Why else would dozens of attack stories a day be fired at her? That which does not kill her makes her stronger!

I don't think Palin's ready to be president, but the more they attack this woman the more I rethink my opinions of her. At least she can take a punch, which is more than you can say for the current residents.

I am still searching the Constitution that give Congress the right to demand that individuals purchase anything , much less health insurance. When are those who claim to be against such a travesty going to raise the Constitutional question and demand answers?

Obama knows that what he has done(seizing auto industries and replacing CEO's) and what he is doing(health care and cap and trade) is unconstitutional but it matters little to him. His only interest is to destroy the economy of this country in accordance to his Puppet Master George Soros.

"Death panels" is a sensational term to get people's attention. A more accurate rendering would be "rationing panels." With panels putting out recommendations that could affect what insurance companies will cover in terms of mammograms, is it really too much of a stretch to imagine government panels putting out more recommendations that blur into regulations to cut costs if the government takes over healthcare?

I don't think Palin's "death panel" charge was too far-fetched.

"Technically true?" What does that mean? Listen friend. Things are either true or false. Ditch the layers of crap you're trying to feed the public. Can anyone report the facts anymore without putting a spin on them? For someone that matters so little, why does the left put so much time and energy into discrediting Sarah Palin. A year ago, the left had the public thinking that she said she could see Russia from her front porch, but not anymore. The more you attack this broad the stronger she gets. She's taking your best shots, and she's getting back up everytime. She makes elitest women on the left feel like crap. She's had five kids and looks fabulous. No plastic surgery. No fat fake stupid lips. Had the courage to bring a down syndrome baby into the world. Doesn't have a live in caregiver/nanny from Ecuador that raises her kids. Didn't have everything handed to her by her elite family. The joke used to be that the repubs were the rich, out of touch ones. No more.

Just 8 logical comments into the discussion and Meriweather offers the "not very intelligent or educated" card. The left believes we can't see truth through their smokescreen of mindless name-calling and baseless belittlement. Just like the "technically true, but..." tactic, they fail to recognize that those who know what those 'word' things 'technically' mean will have a better understanding of what this POS bill 'technically' states.
Maybe Mathew will grace us one day with a piece on what socialism is... 'technically'.

  • Nathan 2 years ago

I think Mr. Cook needs to learn what rhetoric is. The bill does have provisions that lead to some americans "could face jail time as punishment." The fact that it would take repeated disobidience to the "laws", I use the word loosely for several reasons, in the bill is unrelated. It is Absurd enough as is that jail time is a potential punishement for not getting health insurance, and no my liberal "friends" you can't use the similiarties with the Car insurance system, driving a car is not a right, but living is. A very similiar discourse can be used on her use of death panels, while it isn't called a death panel, and while it choosing life/death may not happen unless certain circumstances occur, the bill(s) have provisions that set up a panel of officals which will be able to control the distribution of services, which is by definition a death panel. While I do agree that we should question every political figure, I think your critism of Palin in these two regards is unfair

You can call them "Happy Panels" for all I care. The bottom line is that the government WILL decide who should live and die based on age and money. Apparently, I am not very intelligent or educated. At least according to one post here. So be it! However, one other thing that I am is a realist. I understand that government fails to do anything well or efficiently. There on exceptions th that rule in the annals of recorded history. This will be no exception.
Just the fact that it will take 10 years to rais enough revenue for 5 years of coverage should scare the hell out of anyone. Add that to the fact that the government always loballs everything it atteempts to do is well....

THe Demos ---- I don't call them "liberals" because they hijacked that label from an honorable political philosophy decades ago ---- like they hijack everything else that they want....the Demos call their hijacking of healthcare "healthcare reform" and they crow that they have for this scheme the endorsement of the AARP. Which is pretty much like Typhoid Mary endorsing aspirin. Defeat OhBummerCare and if it does get enacted into law, work to repeal and cancel it, ASAP. Don't tie yourself in a knot trying to sound "reasonable". In the new scheme, if you don't buy coverage, you WILL go to jail. Hiding behind the IRS doesn't make it less true. Ask yourself this. WILL YOU EVER GO TO JAIL IF YOU FAIL TO BUY COVERAGE IN THE CURRENT SYSTEM? Couch-critics like yourself are the reason a socialist is leading the US today. And yes, he is a socialist.
