The Pennsylvania chapter of the AFL-CIO gave a formal endorsement Tuesday to incumbent Senator Arlen Specter in his bid for a sixth term. The organization houses nearly a million state union members.
The executive committee of the labor coalition voted 34-9 this past weekend to lend its support to Specter.
“He [Specter] is a proven leader who has stood with working families when the chips are down,” wrote President Bill George in a statement, “especially his key role in passing the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 which has protected jobs, helped unemployed workers, and prevented this nation from sinking into another great depression.”
The backing comes a month-and-a-half prior to the May 18 Democratic senatorial primary. Specter is being challenged for the nomination by Delaware County Congressman Joe Sestak.
“Our principle obligation will be in helping share his [Specter's] record and message of support for all of Pennsylvania's workers,” said Rick Bloomingdale, Pennsylvania AFL-CIO Secretary-Treasurer, according to the statement.
The group previously supported Specter in 2004, according to The Delaware County Daily Times.
It has also thrown its weight behind State Rep. Bryan Lentz (D-161) who is seeking to succeed Sestak as congressman of Delaware County.
The Pa. AFL-CIO joins other prominent associations in support of Specter, which include the United Auto Workers, the Pennsylvania State Education Association and the state chapter of the Service Employees International Union.
Nearly a week ago, Sestak picked up the support of the Essington International Association of Machinists Lodge 1776.
“Joe Sestak is there for us when we need him, not just when he needs us,” said Lodge 1776 President Rich Howell in a statement.
In addition, Sestak recently received the backing of the United Food and Commercial Workers Local 1776 and the National Association of Woman.
