Video: Republicans plan on repealing health care reform before it even passes

Newt Gingrich proposes the new Contract with America promise to repeal health care reform.  AP Photo Jeff Swinger

The GOP has recently been labeled "the party of no" because of their consistent obstruction to legislation and with their recent comments they are certainly not running away from that label.  Yesterday Newt Gingrich, who made himself famous with the Republican "Contract with America" in 1994, has said the new "Contract" should only include one thing, repeal health care legislation.

As Think Progress notes Gingrich is not alone as Rep. Tom Price (R-GA) and Rep. Joe Barton (R-TX) have also said they would work to repeal health care reform if Republicans were to gain a majority in Congress.

Of course the Republican proposal is dependent upon health care reform actually passing.  That is a big if as the Senate still has not voted to end the current filibuster.  Even if a deal is agreed upon with all sixty votes the bill would then have to pass through the House which is not a sure thing since many progressives in the House do not like the current outline of the Senate deal.  So one must question what the Republican "Contract with America" will consist of if Democrats do not manage to pass health care reform.

There is one other major problem with the Republican idea of repealing health care reform if they get a majority in Congress.  Any bill they pass repealing health care would have to be signed by the President in order to actually take effect.  Overriding a President veto requires a 2/3 vote in both the House and Senate which is a super-majority even the Democrats lack right now.  Therefore even if Republicans did get a majority they would not realistically be able to repeal health care until 2012 and then only if President Obama did not win re-election.

These people are evil to the core. How can they have so little regard for human life and the suffering created by our broken and unaffordable health care system? As long as they are provided with great health care coverage, they don't care about the citizen's who are not. The same with seniors who already have medicare and don't give a **** about the rest of us who don't. Eventually, the only people who will have affordable health care will be those who already have social medicine (medicare, medicaid, TriCare and members of Congress). Even businesses will eventually drop employee coverage as premiums continue to rise. Those of us who pay for our own coverage are already in a crisis, but it is going to catch up with the rest of the country if nothing is done soon. I think it is time to declare war against the Republican party. They don't blink an eye spending money to kill people in wars, but they say we can't afford to save people. Hypocrites all of them!!!

    Jaime,
I have paid my own way all my life, you loser. I am paying a premium of almost $1000 per month for one person. I am paying MORE than my share! I am paying for myself plus all those on medicare and other government programs as well as the uninsured. Is that fair? Who pays for your health care??? I bet you don't. It is either your employer or the government. Health care needs to be affordable for everyone, and everyone needs to pay their fair share including YOU! I can guarentee you are not paying your fair share or you would be all for health care reform.

The party of 'No' is in good company. (54% of Americans agree)

    Douglas,

The problem with liberals is that they 'think' with their emotions. Name calling and ridiculing instead of presenting evidence that this bill will actually accomplish what you hope for!

Big government has proven itself to be inefficient and laden with corruption and fraud.

Any concern on your part that 'amendments' are being pushed against items Obama already stood up and told us weren't in the bill in the first place and that Republicans were just 'fear mongering'?

You guys are always talking about how we want to 'kill' people in wars....like dems didn't almost unanimously support both of the wars!! and dems are now in charge and our soldiers are still there!

And weren't we told by politicians on both sides that these wars were going to 'save' people? I don't care to defend Republicans, but I'm not so blinded by ideology and emotion that I can't see hypocrisy on both sides. Get real!

it sounds just as foreign to all the righties that have their EMPLOYERS pay the majority of their healthcare insurance costs...only a minority of people actually pay 100% of their heathcare insurance costs...most companies are looking seriously hard at their insurance costs... they will have to decide to cut out employee insurance or layoff employees to offset rising insurance costs.

Gigi says "The party of 'No' is in good company. (54% of Americans agree)"

You are quoting a FoxNews poll. What do you expect a FoxNews poll to come up with? I'm sure a lot of people think nothing should be done, but most people already have subsidized health care and so they don't believe health care reform will affect them or they have been misled into believing that it will harm them. It actually makes traditional medicare stronger, so that it will be sustainable into the future. If left alone medicare will go bankrupt in 8 years. As it is now, the insurance companies are draining medicare by taking subsidies for health care they are not delivering. We are now paying tax dollars to subsidize insurance company profits, which will continue if health care is not passed with a strong public option. Health care reform is not just about providing health care to those who don't have it, it is about cutting waste and fraud and bringing down costs for all of us.

    ArtherJBear,

Yes, I'm sure the only people who aren't 'in love' with the health care reform bill are the ones who have been 'mislead' or are just selfish.

It couldn't possibly be that we are well informed.

How could medicare be bankrupt in 8 years with the government running it? Are you serious? NO WAY!!

And if you can give me one example of the government 'cutting waste and fraud', I might think they'd do it this time!

Where'd you get your information? Huffington Post?

Here is an example of How the Obama Admin is spending our Tax $$$ and how He and Pelosi/Reid will spend the New taxes they'll implemement on everyone to pay for the Health Scare Scam Bill.

As a quote from the article: "The # of Federal Emplyees has exploded DURING the recession". AND more Fed employees are getting 6-figure salaries. In fact the average salary for Fed Empl. is >$71,000 while the average in the private sector is $40,331.

And in the Transportation Dept. when the Recession STARTED there was ONE employee making $170K or more.
There are NOW 1,690 employees with $170K or >. And ALL of this on our tax $$$ while they pass Trillion $ stimulus bills. Guess where the stimulus went???

And now they want even more $$$ from us. They aren't going to stop spending until they are stopped. Spread the link and the one below on 111 NEW agencies created in the Health Bill
