Video: Glenn Beck continues to claim innocence on his gold-buying tactics

Glenn Beck still has significant gold-buying sponsors, AP Photo Evan Agositini

Today Glenn Beck finally responded to one of my criticisms against his show.  Well actually to be completely truthful Beck was responded to a Media Matters for America report which quoted my article but I will still consider it an honor to finally have Beck respond to my pestering.  Much like Beck anxiously waits for Anita Dunn to call his red phone I have anxiously anticipated my first Beck rebuttal and now it has finally come.

Moving past my inflated ego allow me to report and respond to exactly what Beck discussed today on his radio show.  The Media Matters article (quoting my own article) accuses Beck of essentially deceiving his audience by advocating buying gold on his show without disclosing the significant sponsorship Beck has from gold-buying companies.  The Media Matters article also accuses Beck of  failing to disclose his own personal stake in gold (Beck has said that he owns a significant amount of gold) and the potential he has to personally profit should his audience follow his advice.

Today Beck responded by saying his sponsorship is made obvious to all his listeners and that he warns his listeners of the risks involved in buying gold.  Once more Beck distorts the story and leaves out crucial facts.  When it comes to the advertisements Beck does for these companies he is correct in saying that it is obvious he is being paid by the companies involved and that he asks his listeners to "pray" before buying gold.  However there have been many times on Beck's television show (such as the segments seen here, here, and here) in which Beck scares his audience about possible hyperinflation and encourages them to buy gold without even telling the same audience of the potential conflict of interest he has. Beck might assume that all his audience is aware of his significant sponsorship with gold-buying firms but that is quite an assumption.  Would it not be better for Beck to be straightforward and simply disclose his potential conflict of interest each time he advocates buying gold?

Thousands (if not millions) of Beck's viewers trust him completely so one could see how it would be easy for many confuse the "I am being paid to endorse this product" Glenn Beck from the "I am giving you an honest political and economic assessment" Glenn Beck.  These subtle guld-buying pushes done on Beck's program may actually be more successful in getting people to buy gold than the actual advertisements Beck does yet he never informs his viewers of his sponsorship or the inherent risks of buying gold in these segments.

Now, pointing out that Al Gore has benefitted and continues to benefit from pushing a phoney HOAX! on the American public which will cost them, if he gets his way, in taxes and 'skyrocketing' energy bills at a time of 17% unemployment! He will benefit while we get screwed.....That would be jounalism.

But, even if you are 'right' about Beck pushing gold because he's greedy (which you aren't), at least those who've done as he recommended have 'benefitted' financially! (and will have something to spend if this idiot president keeps flushing what's left of our economy down the toilet).

We hear his 'gold' commercials. Why do you think anyone is deceived? Isn't it possible that he 'believes' a person should invest in gold, and that's why he does the commercials? Good grief!!!

So the hell what if Beck profits from his listeners buying gold. That is how endorsements work. Are you saying that if you had the opportunity to make money by advertising a product or commodity, you wouldn't? How many TV networks are there? Well, every one of them sells advertising. Every one of them gives props to companies. Why is it different for Beck? You should be bitching about Cheerio adds.

But I thought Glenn was an "every-man," average American... I guess we all are muti-millionaires at heart. He just cares so much about everyone in this country... Except progressives, blacks, hispanics, asians (its documented), anyone who supports Obama, anyone who questions him, anyone who asks him to elaborate on his 'questions,' GE, Woodrow Wilson, FDR, TR, JFK, LBJ, Both Clintons, Al Gore, Timothy Geitner, Ben Bernake, Keith Olbermann, Rachel Maddow, the FED, Van Jones, Anita Dunn, Michelle Obama, New York, the ADL, the UN, the WTO, NAFTA, California, Washington DC, Congress, half the SCOTUS, Lindsey Graham, John McCain, anyone who lives in New Orleans, Muslims, the FCC... You know what, maybe he just hates all of us, and has a few friends he likes a lot.

    Tom,

Since you are making an "enemies list" for Beck, you might as well include Both Bush Presidents and their administrations as he was HIGHLY critical of them. (How do you think he got hired at CNN in the FIRST PLACE?)

Ahh, the liberal short term memory.

So when gold was at 800, and he said it would be at 1200 in a year....was he wrong? The people who are listening to his show tend to be more educated then most (you may find that a suprise) and they are also smarter with their finances. It makes sense that CONSERVATIVES would invest in gold as part of their retirement plan. So he is spinning tales of hyperinflation? What has happened? The fed is montetizing their debt and the dollar is devalued while gold is skyrocketing.

This sounds like a mountain out of a mole hill.

Beck told his sheep to stay out of the stock market. That was back when the Dow was below 8000. It's made a 30% rebound since then and now he wants them to buy gold at a 30% premium. I guess he just hates his viewers. That would also explain why he greets them with "hello you sick twisted freaks" every morning.

Beck is saying that gold should be bought as 'insurance' in case our 'dollars' become worthless. This is good advice and common sense!

Anyone who knows him well enough to trust his advice has listened to him more than once or twice.

The man is on the air 20 hours a week minus commercials, plus has written several NY Times best sellers and has a web page and a newsletter! We know of his 'gold sponsorship'!

    Witt says:
"Once more Beck distorts the story and leaves out crucial facts"

One could replace the name 'Beck' with 'Witt' and have a more accurate statement!

Congratulations on the ego stroke, though.

Beck has been promoting Gold for years. As of this week his listener/buyers have made out well. One would assume Beck has also.
A very very very wise commentor here, one who was priviledged to know MOST things who went by MOST of the names starting with "J". Jake..James...Jane etc.. Well we were all priviledged to get his /her Liberal knowledge on the Gold markets at just under $1000. He said... "SELL gold":. Was the J-man/J-woman a futures or options trader perhaps...if so he/she would have made a bundle taking the opposite of his SELL recommendation. On the other hand one would also have made even more of a bundle leveraging their buys when Beck has said to buy. So what. Hannity and Levin also have Gold dealers as sponsors.

The crucial issue is Your and Media Matters attempt at smearing Beck at any cost. Liberal/Progressives are on a mission to SILENCE, to insure that the ONLY voices heard are those of the Dem/Liberal Left. An attack on free speech...next up Fairness Doctrine.

I don't need Glenn to teach history about what happens to dissenters, if your 'favorite political philosophers' acheive their political goals.

They may not teach it in school any more, but it's still on wikipedia!

    Unfortunately Gigi,
that is part of the HOPE that this administrations' followers have. To use The Patriot Act and other similar tactics like the "Truth squad in Missouri" during the election that was gonna be on the lookout for those disseminating "Wrongful and distorted" information on Obama. Anything of course could have been said about the McCain/Palin camp unhindered. Their HOPE is to CHANGE ameriKa by getting rid of dissenters...first with censorship via FairNess Doctrine lookalike bills then with physical silence.

As the saying goes...History always repeats itself...it just keeps getting more expensive.

The truth about Glenn and his pitch for gold companies is starting to come out.....
In one such complaint, Mary Sisak of New Castle, Pa., wrote in August that she contacted Goldline because she saw a television ad featuring Beck, and online endorsements from Levin and Thompson. After spending $5,000 on Swiss Francs, Mary said she learned she could have purchased the same number of coins for $1,600 less.

“How could I be mislead by Glenn Beck, Fred Thompson and Marvin [sic] Levin?" she wrote.

Never had any complaints Dan. What's twixt muh ears is in perfect working order...In fact even while downing excess Egg Nog, I am able to discern that "umep apisdn" perfectly describes the Liberal Spin masquerading as your thought processes.

It would be interesting to learn if Mary Sisak of New Castle Pa. was of the same Ilk as those "Grandparents" who rode around taping Private cell phone calls of Republicans during another Christmas season.

It's called due diligence, It's called doing your homework, It's called shopping around.
Researching a specific market's highs and lows works too. As well as how a market works. AND....If Gold continues up she could make MUCH more than $1,66.

Wonder if Mary Mary quite CONTRARY, complain when Kramer told her to buy stocks in early 2007, or CNBC or CNN or Goldman Sachs or Bank of America or Bob Brinker or Merril Lynch.... OORRR when Barney Frank and Chris Dodd told them the mortgage industry was FINE go ahead and buy property, or BofA,or
