Video: Conservatives already decrying a 'War on Christmas' that liberals say does not exist

The War on Christmas theme has returned along with Santa Claus this holiday season.  AP Photo Sven Kaestner

Conservatives are once more pointing to various stories as examples of what they call the "War on Christmas."  Meanwhile liberals claim the stories are all isolated examples and largely exaggerated in order to rile up the conservative base.

Included in the stories being reported are Bill O' Reilly's focus on one New Jersey school which is no longer allowing children to sell Christmas memorabilia at a holiday fair.  O' Reilly has promised to go after the principal of the school involved saying that she will be on his show "one way or another."  Think Progress reports that the American Family Association has also joined in the "War on Christmas" theme by accusing Gap Inc. of abandoning Christmas.  The AFA has said that Gap refuses to even say the word "Christmas" in any of their advertisements.  However Think Progress unearthed one advertisement (seen below) by Gap which actually does feature the word "Christmas" contrary to the allegations of the AFA.  In addition a number of clothing items being sold by Gap Inc. feature the word "Christmas."

    this is one of most leftwing biased articles I've seen in quite a while. first off, Christ-mas implies its about the Birth of Jesus and yet NO ONE in GOVT, the Corporate World, etc. will acknowledge it. IF CRYBABY ATHEISTS don't like it, they should have to turn their heads and/or ignore it. I ignore many stupid holidays created by leftists like "Earth Day", a NON-HOLIDAY, but I still let them put out their message and don't go to court to complain about it...leave Christ in Christmas and reciprocate with the leftists...but then again, leftists want it their way and only their way...I do take issue with conservatives going too far with some of their examples of "a war on Christmas" stuff...

    If only Christmas was based in the Muslim faith. Then the left would break it's collective neck to support and promote the holiday, even fight against any opposition or discrimination of this holy day (if it were Muslim).

    The bigotry against Christianity seems to be quite acceptable to the leftists. Christians and rednecks are the last groups open to bigotry and ridicule.

    Ahhh, the annual War on Christmas argument. One of the first signs that winter is approaching.

    Christians (and I am one of them) need to get over this desire to be continual victims. We are not oppressed, and to claim as such minimizes true oppression of Christians currently going on around the world.

    Ummm Joe...

    There IS a "War on Christianity". I submit that if you can't see that, then maybe you aren't living your beliefs as closely as you should.
    When you have hundreds of "isolated examples" distributed all over the United States, it's NOT "isolated".
    This particular "War" is one of attrition, a little "X-mas" here, a lawsuit about a nativity on public land (at a state capitol) there... and soon you habe a competely non-religious religious holiday.
    Seriously, when was the last time you saw a lawsuit over a Star of David, during Chaunnuka?

    Doc: I'll thank you not to cast aspersions on my faith, and I will pay you that same respect. To your point - isolated examples of what? People being mean to Christians? People not liking Christians? People trying to get Christians to shut up? I freely admit that all of these things happen; however, it's also plainly evident that there are just as many examples of Christians trying to do the exact same things to nonChristians. So do Christians have a war against nonbelievers? Of course not. Sometimes people don't get along, and sometimes they take it to the courts. It isn't indicative of a larger trend.

    How can liberals in good conscience;

    first watch their comrades take effort to remove nativity scenes from public places, religious Christmas songs from the schools, 'God' from the pledge of alligence, etc. and then;

    ridicule the right for saying so?

    These are commonplace efforts; not isolated incidences.

    The deceit and the gall of the left never ceases to astonish me!

    How can the 'right' who claim to be defenders of individual rights justify force-feeding not just religion but their particular version of Christianity down everyone else's throats?

    And how can these supposed defenders of small businesses justify threatening to boycott a merchant who makes the effort to INCLUDE all possible customers with simple greetings like 'Happy Holidays'?

    I'll chime in with my Pastafarian brethren.

    FYI, in New Jersey, there is a movement by Rutgers Pastafarians to have Montville, NJ, spend the same amount of taxpayer money buying and putting up a tribute to the Flying Spaghetti Monster (FSM is the one, true, noodley God) as the city currently spends buying and putting up the Christian Nativity (the Christian hoax of a virgin birth, etc). It's on the venganza website and their Facebook page.

    The US Constitution says that there should be no endorsement of any religions, let alone "preferential" endorsement of some religions but not others.

    But Christians want the government to just promote theirs and they want to use everyone else's tax dollars to pay for it! Unbelievable!

    If the Christian myth is going to be supported by tax dollars, then so too should our true Holy Noodliness, FSM.
    Pastafarians need to stand up for our true God (sauce be upon him).

    RAmen.

    Apparently the Pastafarian comments were serious!

    An article published on the front page of today’s Daily Record newspaper (Morris County, NJ) basically notes that Montville NJ has been caught using taxpayer money to preferentially promote religious icons for some religions but refusing others.

    College students from three different universities in NJ have united to protest that the town is violating the US Constitution, and they have asked that the nativity be removed (or that the town similarly display the Flying Spaghetti Monster, the god of Pastafarians).
