I wrote Islam takes the D.C. Mall on 9/9/2009. I linked Islam on Capitol Hill's website, which claimed 50,000 Muslims would descend on the mall and in ominous text at the bottom read "OUR TIME HAS COME."
Well their time came and went for this round. There were about 5,000 Muslims on the Mall, praying at the Capitol building and whatnot, so the organizers only missed by 90% or so. I previously wrote this "is going to go over like a lead balloon. It did, just not in the fashion I assumed it would. The event was so underwhelming, that the news barely covered it. Compared to the grand displays Muslims overseas held in front of Christian Holy sites all over Europe last year, this was like Harold & Kumar's birthday party.
The imagery of Islam on Capitol Hill was inspired by President Obama's campaign posters, which were inspired by old school agitprop.
Perhaps the next time the activist elements won't be so bold as to declare "OUR TIME HAS COME." Perhaps next time the slogan will be "Why can't we be friends?" or "Please show up in D.C. this time!"
Perhaps next time, they might want to choose some spokesmen who are a little more cuddly. Hearing Dr. Ahmad Dwidar, Imam of the Islamic Center in New York, say “We are going to the White House, so that Islam will be victorious, Allah willing, and the White House will turn into the Muslim house” is not very all-American, unifying or comforting. It's good thing for him the news was not interested, or this event could have become a circus for Islam on Capitol Hill.
Lucky for them our journalists, who should be asking questions, stay home as well.

Are you suggesting America has journalists? No one has been able to find them for quite awhile. It would appear the media does not do any reporting these days. At least nothing that would interest the american public.

I was there and it WAS somewhat of a fashion statement. Which I find odd because the Quran is pretty clear about abstaining from material influences and especially women being flashy that might attract a man during prayer. But the usual all black chador covers were not required. Maybe to make Islam seem more appealing and normal to Americans. Personally, just having to be separated from my husband while praying would tick me off enough, much less being told to cover or pray in a language I don't understand. But I guess we can only wait and see how Islam evolves as more American women get roped in by marrying Muslim men. God bless them when they find out just how demoralizing Islam is to women!
I was there and I find it funny that you actually found a way to put a negative spin on such a positive event.There were many that wanted to come but couldn't. There where christains with bullhorns being so obnoxious that other christains at the event actually apologised to my wife and I.This was the first event of it's kind in the U.S god willing next time many more will be able to come.The bottom line is wether it was 50,000 or 5 we came in peace and acomplished what we wanted.Spin it anyway you want sir the event was a success.All praise is due to Allah.

I've been to Mosques that demand women observe "proper dress" on the property. As in the property line.
I have read 3 translations of the Quran and several dozen Hadiths.

No way, Essa Ahmed. For too long the Islamic community has escaped taking responsibility for it's extremists. You can play the indignant card all day, but Muslim's refusal to taken on, and sometimes excuse, these high profile radical leaders is a disgrace.

to Tyler: I've not only lived in a muslim country for 2 years but also lived in France for 6 years where more than 10% of the population is muslim by now. The number is close to 7 million. Thank God Sarkozy started to clean up a bit and you don't feel like being in a third world country when you hit the Paris Metro, unlike the London Subway which can be quite scary at times with the latest saudi fashion in overwhelming numbers.

Another thing which has stricken me at the first page was the sentence: "We intend to manifest Islam's majestic spiritual principals as revealed by Allah to our beloved prophet Muhammad (PEACE BE UPON HIM) of Arabia." This line is wrong by spirit and can potentially mislead those who are new to or outside of Islam. Calling our beloved prophet (peace be upon him) "Muhammad of Arabia" is diminishing the message of Islam, since he was the prophet and messenger sent to all mankind.
This is also an indication of who the organisers were. Let alone semi-militant character of christian believers here, muslims nevertheless should be careful and thoughtful in delivering the God's messages and careful and thoughtful in selecting and supporting those who will

It is also not true that English translations do not capture what the "pure heavenly Arabic" states; there are many English and other translations accepted by Muslim scholars. Jesus is the only Way.
I am a 13 year old girl. Islam on capitol hill was succesful.. succesful in bringing over 30,000 muslims from many diverse places to make jummah prayer on captol hill, peacfully. Unless you were there[as i was] you will never fully understand how many people you could acually see. The croud was endless. On this very historic day, news coverage, photographers, and bits of this event was not necessary. We thank allah for this blessing in letting us come fourth and pray on capitol hill to fufill this ummah. Being so young i do not yet understand how someone can hate a people who dopnt hate back. i belive that the people who hate us! as a people shall stop. Critics of Islam actually quote this verse out of context. In order to understand the context, we need to read from verse 1 of this surah. It says that there was a peace treaty between the Muslims and the Mushriks (pagans) of Makkah. This treaty was violated by the Mushriks of Makkah. A period of four months was given to the Mushriks of Makkah to make amends. Otherwise war would be declared against them. This verse is quoted during a battle, and hence the Qur'an says, "Kill the Mushriks wherever you find them", during a battle to boost the morale of the Muslim soldiers. What the Qur'an is telling Muslim soldiers is, don’t be afraid during battle; wherever you find the enemies kill them.The name of Sura 5 the famous "Verse of the Sword" is directed against a particular group accused of oath-breaking.
