The Times of India is reporting that the prominent orthodox Muslim school, Darul Uloom Deoband, has issued a fatwa against birthday parties.
Darul Uloom Deoband is one of the foremost centers of Islamic learning and thought in the world.
It influences Islamic schools in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, The United States, The United Kingdom, South Africa and hundreds of other Muslim centers it's affiliated with throughout the world.

When Darul Uloom Deoband was asked if it's permissible to celebrate the natal anniversary of Sir Syed Ahmed Khan, the founder of the Aligarh Muslim University in India, the response was less than celebratory.
According to the vice-chancellor of Darul Uloom Deoband, Maulana Abul Kasim Naumani, "Muslims should not follow the tradition of western culture of celebrating birthdays as it against the Shariat law."
Naumani went on to emphasize that even Darul Uloom Deoband's Islamic seminary does not celebrate the birthday of Muhammed.
