The Seattle Post-Intelligencer is reporting that Afghan president Hamid Karzai is pardoning a 19-year-old woman who was sentenced to 12 years in prison for being raped by a family member.
The unnamed woman was found guilty under Islamic sharia law of having sexual relations outside of the bonds of marriage.
In the original trial, the judge offered to free the victim if she agreed to marry her relative/rapist, but she refused.
Karzai pardoned the woman only after she recently agreed to marry her rapist.
Not The First Case Like This Under Sharia...
In 2010, Saudi Arabia has sentenced a Filipina rape victim to 100 lashes for "an illicit affair" after being raped by a Muslim Bangladeshi co-worker.
In 2006, after being repeatedly raped by a 51-year-old Iranian Revolutionary Guard, Iran executed 16-year-old Atefah Sahaaleh after being found guilty of "crimes against chastity."
The University of Rhode Island has posted an academic writing concerning convicted women and girls (as young as nine) being raped prior to execution;
"According to a special 'religious decree' issued by Ayatollah Khomeini, virgin women prisoners must be raped before execution to prevent their going to heaven.
A Guard conducts the rape the night before their murder.
The next day, the religious judge at the prison issues a marriage certificate and sends it to the victim’s family, along with a box of sweets."
