"If You Love Me... Pass This Bill (or possibly Feed My Sheep?)"
Frank James, writer with the left-leaning National Public Radio, had some interesting comparisons and observations in regards to the president's visit to North Carolina State University in Raleigh this past Wednesday.
While speaking before an enthusiastic crowd of supporters at NCSU, the president was attempting to rally his faithful to support his recently unveiled American Jobs Act stimulus plan, complete with an almost $1/2 trillion price tag.
James noted that a spontaneous exchange between Obama and a rally supporter ended up eerily reminiscent of a New Testament exchange between Christ and Saint Peter.
As Frank James wrote in his article;
AUDIENCE MEMBER: I love you, Barack!
THE PRESIDENT: I love you back. (Applause.) But first — but if you love me — if you love me, you got to help me pass this bill. (Applause.) If you love me, you got to help me pass this bill.
Here's John 21:15, the New International Version, describing a scene between Jesus and his disciples:
When they had finished eating, Jesus said to Simon Peter,"Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?"
"Yes, Lord," he said, "you know that I love you."
Jesus said, "Feed my lambs."
As the politically liberal Mr. James correctly points out in his article, Obama has an "almost messiah-like status he had in the eyes of many supporters..."
