Local youth remember 9-11 with pain and sweat

Wilmington's Lewis kids come from a long line of those who serve others... and proud of it.

Dad (Tom) is a Navy vet as well as a retired New York City police officer, and mom (Tara) is a former Emergency Room nurse.

Both sides of the family have generations worth of both New York cops and fire fighters, as well as members of the Armed Forces, with a heavy emphasis towards the Marine Corps side of the equation.

Quite possibly because it's in their DNA, the oldest of the seven Lewis children, John (18); Molly (16); and Breda (15) have decided to commemorate the tenth anniversary of the terrorist attack by sacrificing a little pain and more than a little sweat to let Wilmington know that patriotism is alive and well in the young people of this nation.

With the Stars and Stripes held high, the brood's eldest three pounded out three miles along Market Street, one of the busier roads in all of New Hanover County. But not until they all said a prayer for those killed ten years ago.

When asked why they chose to remember 9-11 in this particular fashion, big brother John summed it up for his siblings, "We just wanted people to know that there are still young people who love this country. And besides, there have been so many others that have sacrificed a lot more for America than by anything we ever did."

As Molly stated, "And we did this on Market Street because sometimes people need to be reminded of exactly what happened ten years ago. Can you believe some people have already forgotten what happened back on 9-11?"

Breda, the quietest of the three, simply shouted "USA, USA!"
