Balls forbidden in Canadian school

Keep it spongy...

CTV of Canada is reporting that the students at Earl Beatty Jr. and Sr. Public School in Toronto are banned from having hard balls at their disposal for purposes of amusement or recreation while at school.

With the exception of spongy Nerf-style balls, everything from volleyballs to baseballs to tennis balls are now classified as strictly verboten.

The catalyst for the outlawing of the amusing orbs was an errant soccer ball accidentally striking an unnamed parent on the head while on school grounds.

In a written statement released earlier this week, the school administration stated, "Any balls brought will be confiscated and may be retrieved by parents from the office. The only kind of ball allowed will be nerf balls or sponge balls."

CTV also reports that "The letter had also mentioned that the school had some serious incidents where students, staff or parents were hit, or nearly hit, by a hard ball on school property."

Principal Alicia Fernandez claimed that the change in policy was due to her concern for the safety of younger students, some of whom were afraid of playing out of doors for fear of being struck by hard balls.

Principal Fernandez stated, "It is a school issue of safety. I am the principal, I care for the kids' safety and I have that decision making right."
