The nation's first embryo adoption bill passed Georgia Senate

Georgia Senate has approved the nation’s first embryo adoption bill – Option of Adoption Act (HB 388), legislation which would allow for embryos to be formally adopted, offering the same legal rights to adoption as human beings, in accordance with Georgia adoption laws.

According to the bill, en embryo is an individual fertilized egg of human species, from the single-cell stage to 8 – week development (source).

While the HB388 allows for adoption of the embryo, it fails to grant it its own rights.  It does however, ask for a change to the definition of the word “child” to include human embryo. It also asks for the adoption to be no longer carried out as a form of contract or property law.

Governor Sonny Perdue is expected to sign it into law, given his life long pro-life stance.

Since the Senate version of the Option of Adoption Act was changed slightly, it has to go back to the House for final approval. The 2009 legislative session ends on Friday, April 3.

Another related piece of legislature is also being considered, SB 169, which will limit the creation of embryos for research, scientific or destructive purposes. It does allow for continuation of the research that is being already done on existing stem cells, supports adult stem cell, research and studies using induced pluripotent stem cells (source).

The HB 388 has been passed and signed by the Governor on 07/01/09.

I believe you are combining two bills in your description of the Embryo Adoption bill that passed the House and Senate.
SB 169 which is held up in the House would "limit the creation of embryos for research, scientific or destructive purposes. It does allow for continuation of the research that is being already done on existing stem cells, supports adult stem cell, research and studies using induced pluripotent stem cells.
The Option of Adoption (of Embryos) bill only outlines legal procedures for relinquishment of rights of the embryo prior to transfer to the woman who will bear the child, and expedited adoption. It is optional meaning that the way such arrangements are currently done can continue too. participants in these transfers of embryos have the choice.

at last. people with some integrity. the stupid
liberal supreme court jerks who are all dead now, and good riddance, who allowed roe v wade, to become law, should have been publicly flogged. a complete disregard for humanity was displayed in that ruling and we are living the results today. when you can abort a viable fetus on demand and whim because you wanted tdo have sex and did not take the time to take precautions against conception, that was the day this country was headed to retribution and hellfire and that is a fact. more power to them and stop abortions of any kind except in the case of rape or incest or the mother's health, which was always available. enough of this premeditated murder on a defenseless individual, which was created at the MOMENT OF THE MEETING OF THE SPERM AND THE EGG., PERIOD.

Does anyone else think this is ridiculous, considering all the problems we have facing us as a community and as a country? Atlanta's crime rate is rising, we don't have enough money to keep a full staff of cops, our homeless population is out of control, and we're nearing Detroit levels of unemployment. And y'all pass a bill about embryo adoption rights?? I wonder why people still think of Georgians as ignorant, bible thumping hicks... Oh right, because we have one running our state!

This comment is for Carla. Are you really a human? You really need to evaluate your values. Unemployment, crime, etc. are all more important than a human life? You fail to see a much bigger picture of life, Carla. You have my sympathies.
