Top 10 things to do while waiting for a good poker hand

If you watch a lot of poker on TV, you might be under the impression that poker is always very exciting. On TV, there’s heart-pounding action on every hand and someone is always getting away with an unbelievable bluff. In real life though, the fact is that good players spend a vast majority of their time folding, twiddling their thumbs, and waiting for a good hand. This can get boring. Really, really boring.

Of course, you could spend this down time doing useful things: looking for tells, watching and memorizing betting patterns, and practicing calculating pot odds. But when you run out of practical things to do, try one of the Top Ten Things to Do While Waiting for a Good Hand.

10.  Start a game of “bet on the flop” with the guy next to you. You take red, he takes black. If two red cards flop, you win. If all three cards are red, he has to pay you double.

9.  Design intricate towers with your chips. Get in some solid practice time for the World Series of Chip Stacking!

8.  Take advantage of the mirrored sunglasses on the player next to you – pop a zit, check your lipstick, fix your contacts.

7.  Give your ear a good cleaning with your key. Better yet, pick your nose. I’ve actually seen people do these things at the table and let me tell you, it was an absolute delight to watch.

6.  Eat!

5.  Tweet.

4.  Do some kegal exercises. (Guys can do these too, you know, and their women will thank them for it.)

3.  Fantasize about the day you win the World Series of Poker. How will you act? Who will be there? What will you do with all that money? Will you need to hire a publicist? Will Angelina Jolie finally notice you?

2.  Practice chip tricks.

and the #1 Thing to do While Waiting for a Good Hand:

1.  Pray for better cards.
