Aside from doing my own legwork at Tulsa casinos, I also rely on two sites for Tulsa poker news, events, and information.
Tulsa Poker Players on Facebook. This page, moderated by local player Mark Holmes, is a great place to read about local players and events. Rarely does a tournament series pass without a flurry of posts on this page. Also of interest is a list Mr. Holmes maintains of free-to-enter poker tournaments sponsored by area businesses. It's also a good place to meet other local players and dealers. It's the unofficial home-away-from-home for the Tulsa poker community.
www.examiner.com. Aside from my own column, you should also check out Robert Kelly, Wichita Poker Examiner. While his home base is in south-central Kansas, Mr. Kelly travels south to casinos in Oklahoma, west to Colorado, in addition to other locations. I first read his column about a poker cruise he enjoyed, which included a final-table experience with Chris Moneymaker. A veteran tournament and cash-game player, his columns serve as a guide to the best places to play in central Oklahoma, whereas I maintain focus on the northeast portion of the state.
Casino websites. The local casinos used to provide a bare minimum of information regarding their poker rooms (sometimes just that they offered poker--like a whisper in a room full of slots). But two now provide their tournament schedules, poker promotions, and events schedules online.
- River Spirit Casino (Creek) (NOTE: Click the Newsletter link, which includes details on three new poker promotions.)
- Hard Rock Casino Resort (Cherokee) (NOTE: Check out the Poker Tournaments page: the Oklahoma State Championship of Poker starts January 26th.)
- Million Dollar Elm (Osage)
The Poker Player Newspaper. I make no secret of the fact that I am a fan of Haley Hintze for her in-depth yet no-nonsense writing style. But in addition to Ms. Hintze column, the Tournament Calendar page provides the daily tournament schedule for the Downstream (Quapaw, OK) and Choctaw (Durant, OK) casinos. I keep hoping all our local casinos will discover this calendar and add their events to the schedule; if you're a dealer or poker room manager visiting my column, I recommend you do so as soon as possible.
If you have any websites you think I should add to my list and share with my readers, please comment below or contact me at Mark74105@cox.net.
