The city of Reno continues its tradition of hosting great poker tournaments as 2010 rolls on. Leading the way after nearly 30 years is the Peppermill Casino, bringing fun and excitement to Northern Nevada poker enthusiasts by featuring not one or two, but three great tournaments this quarter.

Along with the Nevada State Poker Championship playing out this past week from May 5 through 9, and the Jennifer Harman Charity Golf and Poker Tournament, the Peppermill will be hosting an upcoming tournament titled “Legends of the Game.”

The celebrity tournament allows players to rub shoulders with some of the greatest sports legends of all time, including players like Jim Plunkett - Oakland Raiders NFL Super Bowl XV MVP quarterback, Artis Gilmore - Kentucky Colonels ABA Hall of Fame center, and Rollie Fingers - Oakland A’s MLB Hall of Fame pitcher.

Held Saturday, June 5, 2010 at 7:30 PM, the tournament has an initial buy-in of $200 and unlimited $50 re-buys. The cash prize pool is split among the final six players. Part of the proceeds will benefit Reno Philanthropist Evelyn Mount, Big Brothers Big Sisters, and Food Bank of Northern Nevada.

Downtown, Harrah’s features daily No-Limit Hold’em tournaments with a $30 to $60 buy-in and a quarterly World Series of Poker qualifying tournament. Harrah’s obtained the WSOP tournament and name after purchasing Binion’s Horseshoe in March of 2004.

In 1969, Tom Moore asked his friend, “Amarillo Slim” Preston, to bring some of his poker player buddies to Moore’s Holiday Casino in Reno. Moore was a fellow Texan from San Antonio, and “Slim” felt it was only right to help out a fellow Texan, so he brought a train-load of players up North to see the casino.

Those arriving included future WSOP Champions Johnny Moss, “Puggy” Pearson and Doyle Brunson. Benny Binion also made the trip, and after seeing the amazing collection of poker players, inspiration struck. The following year, at his casino in Las Vegas, Binion held the first World Series of Poker in 1970.

The city of Reno no longer holds the largest poker tournaments in the world, but the local casinos have daily tournaments for every budget. Annual tournaments like the Grand Sierra’s Pot of Gold Summer Tournament, held July 22 through August 1, 2010, give everyday poker players a chance to play in great tournaments and slug-it-out for thousands of dollars in prize money.
