The Coldest Winter Ever by Sister Souljah

The Coldest Winter Ever by Sister Souljah

The Coldest Winter Ever by Sister Soujah

Picture Brooklyn, NY, circa of the 1990’s, a drug lord, his wife and his 17 year old daughter by the name of Winter Santiaga let us inside their lives when all the money, power, vanishes because of the FEDS. Losing everything they ever thought was important in life proved them wrong. With the FBI taking down her kingpin father, Winter  takes the lessoned learned by him to heart. As they say when it rains it pours and soon after that life-changing event her beautiful mother is shot in the face disfiguring her in more ways than one. Even still they continue to fight for life as they knew it! In this harrowing, gritty, grimey tale.

Sister Soujah gave life to greedy, drug-dealing business moguls and ultimately, brought out the condition of urban youth. Each page brought out self-hate, the utter disrespect for life, and murder, which kidnapped readers into the thrill seeking adventure,  The Coldest Winter Ever. Taking us to a world most people don’t truly realize exist. Speakin of Sister Souljah she also made a cameo appearance to tell anyone, young or old, the right things to do and how you should carry yourself as an respectable woman.

Winter Santiaga, is a feminine thug-gette, with the street smarts her father taught her for survival. When it comes to gangster mentality, she has that on lock as well. This sister is fearless at any feat she desires to conquer. Winter was always spoiled, and is now attracted to danger, power, money, and possessions. She is very aware of her sexuality and how to use her prowess to make weak ones follow her rules. During her struggle to take over the ‘drug’ world, she also feels great fury towards her father and benevolence towards her mother who she learned had to take the good with the bad! But as gritty and lost Winter is she doesn’t realize that she’s heading down the wrong path.

Midnight, a valient but humble lieutenant to Ricky Santiago, he is also an prominent underworld businessman. Midnight has an obligation towards Winter because of her father. But Winter actually has love for him, which is rare in her case, and Midnight is a deputy with morals. Therefore he really just wants the best for Winter and does his best to protect her. But ‘It’ always, catches you think you’re back on top.

Growing up in the City of Compton, I feel I know a few Winter Santiago’s, and unfortunately when one lives by the gun they die by the gun. If you haven’t had the opportunity to read this book, buy a used copy on Amazon.com, and after you read it pass it on, because any young person, needs to be exposed to reality today and the consequences you may have to endure if you don't remain on a righteous path.

Sister Souljah wrote one of the most memorable stories I’ve ever read. It’s peppered violence, fried with offensive epithets, that’s far from being P.C., scrambled with urban youths with no mentors to guide them and last but not least seasoned with realistic truths.I cannot wait for the much anticipated The Coldest Winter Ever: The Movie! Ito be released, my sisters and I have been waiting. Again I  will never forget this book, I've read it 4 times, just to give to the people I worked with.

I've read this book so many times... I absolutely love it. I heard Jada Pinkett was making it into a movie, but I thought it was just a rumor. I hope it's true... Great review.

The Coldest Winter is a classic. I haven't met anyone that's read it and didn't love the story and Winter. I've read the book 3x's now and it's about that time I do another re-read. My book is so tattered and falling apart because of the many times I've read it and loned it out. Can you believe after I read the first time I wrote a chapter 15. lol, but the review was good, that is all the book is and then some. I heard about the movie but initially didn't want a flick because I loved the book so much I didn't want anything to take away from it, neither did I want a new generation to miss out on such a great book because of the movie. Anyway, I'm excited to see how it comes out and I am rooting for it.

The only thing I didn't like about the CWE, which is really outside of it, is the pre-quel "Midnight"... can't wait for that review.
